Abstract

Technologies for an operating system identifying SSD and CSSD devices based on a corresponding descriptor, and for optimizing operating system functionalities with respect to the SSD/CSSD device. Optimizations include disabling non-SSD/CSSD functionalities, such as HDD defragmentation, and by enabling SSD/CSSD specific functionalities, such as write optimization storage functionalities.

Claims (27)

1. A composite solid-state drive (“CSSD”) comprising:

memory that comprises a plurality of performance classes;

description information corresponding to the CSSD; and

an interface via which the CSSD is configured to communicate the description information to a separate host of the CSSD, where the communicated description information identifies the CSSD as both a solid-state drive (“SSD”) and a composite solid-state drive as opposed to a conventional hard disk drive (“HDD”).

2. The CSSD of claim 1 where the memory is comprised of solid-state memory devices as opposed to magnetic or optical media.

3. The CSSD of claim 2 where at least one of the solid-state memory devices comprises flash memory.

4. The CSSD of claim 1 further configured for operation as a boot device.

5. The CSSD of claim 1 further configured for interacting with an operating system as a conventional hard disk drive.

6. The CSSD of claim 1 where the interface conforms to an Advanced Technology Attachment (“ATA”) interface.

7. The CSSD of claim 1 where the interface conforms to a Small Computer System Interface (“SCSI”) interface.

8. At least one computer-readable storage device that includes computer-executable instructions that form a composite solid-state drive (“CSSD”) driver that, when executed by a computer, configure the computer to:

obtain description information from a CSSD that includes memory comprising a plurality of performance classes, where the obtained description information identifies the CSSD as both a solid-state drive (“SSD”) and a composite solid-state drive as opposed to a conventional hard disk drive (“HDD”); and

provide the obtained description information to a separate host.

9. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 8 where the obtained description information further identifies an optimal write size of the CSSD, an optimal read size of the CSSD, and an optimal allocation size of the CSSD.

10. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 8 where the CSSD is configured as a boot device.

11. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 8 where the CSSD driver interacts with the CSSD as a conventional hard disk drive.

12. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 8 where the interface conforms to an Advanced Technology Attachment (“ATA”) interface.

13. The at least one computer-readable storage device of claim 8 where the interface conforms to a Small Computer System Interface (“SCSI”) interface.

14. A system comprising:

a computing device that includes at least one processor, memory, and an operating system, the computing device configured to:

obtain description information from a composite solid-state drive (“CSSD”), where the obtained description information identifies the CSSD as both a solid-state drive (“SSD”) and a composite solid-state drive as opposed to a conventional hard disk drive (“HDD”); and

optimize, based on the obtained description information and characteristics of the CSSD, interactions by the operating system with the CSSD.

15. The system of claim 14 , where the obtained description information further identifies an optimal write size of the CSSD, an optimal read size of the CSSD, and an optimal allocation size of the CSSD.

16. The system of claim 14 further configured to utilize the CSSD as a boot device.

17. The system of claim 14 further configured to interact with the CSSD as a conventional hard disk drive.

18. The system of claim 14 further configured to communicate with the CSSD via an interface of the CSSD that conforms to an Advanced Technology Attachment (“ATA”) interface.

19. The system of claim 14 further configured to communicate with the CSSD via an interface of the CSSD that conforms to a Small Computer System Interface (“SCSI”) interface.
