Abstract

A package for securing a card is disclosed where the card is retained between two panels that are secured together by a heat-activated adhesives and/or a combination of polymeric and adhesive constituents to drastically hinder surreptitious access to the contents of the package. The package may include additional features for activating or accessing the card and increasing the aesthetic appeal of the package.

Claims (27)

1. A secure card package for a point-of-sale activatable card, comprising:

a first paperboard panel having an outer surface and an inner surface;

a second paperboard panel having an outer surface and an inner surface, the inner surfaces of the paperboard panels facing toward each other;

a card disposed between the first and second paperboard panels;

a laminated layer bonding the first paperboard panel and the second paperboard panel together in a region around the card to enclose the card between the panels, wherein the laminated layer comprises a first polymer layer on the first paperboard panel and a second polymer layer on the second paperboard panel, wherein the first polymer layer is extruded onto the inner surface of the first paperboard panel and the second polymer layer is extruded onto the inner surface of the second paperboard panel; and

a line of separation that defines a perimeter of a removable portion in at least one of the first paperboard panel and the second paperboard panel, the line of separation wholly within the region enclosed between the paperboard panels by an inner perimeter of the laminated layer, wherein the area of the removable portion is less than the area of the card.

2. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein the first paperboard panel and the second paperboard panel are formed from a unitary sheet of material, wherein the first paperboard panel is joined to the second paperboard panel at a fold line.

3. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein the first paperboard panel and the second paperboard panel comprise discrete paperboard panels.

4. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein, upon separation, the line of separation defines a slot in the at least one of the first or second paperboard panels, providing access to the space between the first and second paperboard panels.

5. The secure card package of claim 4 , wherein the slot is dimensioned to allow passage of the at least one card.

6. The secure card package of claim 5 , further comprising a filament that is pre-applied to at least one of the first or second paperboard panels relative to the line of separation, wherein the filament is removable from the package to create the slot.

7. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first or second paperboard panels further comprises an aperture, the card further comprises a data field disposed on the card, and the card is disposed such that at least a portion of the data field is viewable through the aperture.

8. The secure card package of claim 7 , wherein the data field is an activation data field used to activate the point-of-sale activatable card.

9. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein the line of separation extends away from a hanging aperture formed through all the layers of the secure card package for hanging the package on a display rack.

10. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein the line of separation extends parallel to an edge of the secure card package.

11. The secure card package of claim 10 , wherein the edge is a long edge of the secure card package.

12. The secure card package of claim 11 , wherein the line of separation extends parallel to a long edge of the activatable card.

13. The secure card package of claim 12 , wherein the line of separation extends away from a hanging aperture formed through all the layers of the secure card package for hanging the package on a display rack.

14. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein the polymeric coating is selected from the group consisting of low density polyethylene, linear low density polyethylene, high density polyethylene, and copolymers of polyethylene.

15. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein the first paperboard panel comprises a clay coated inner surface and the second paperboard panel comprises a clay coated inner surface.

16. The secure card package of claim 1 , wherein the first polymer layer covers substantially all of the inner surface of the first paperboard panel and wherein the second polymer layer covers substantially all of the inner surface of the second paperboard panel.

17. The secure card package of claim 1 , further comprising a third paperboard panel comprising at least one edge, wherein the at least one edge of the third paperboard panel is joined to at least one edge of the first paperboard panel, and the third paperboard panel is adapted to move through a range of motion, the range of motion including:

a first position wherein the third paperboard panel at least partially covers the first paperboard panel, the first paperboard panel being disposed between the second and third paperboard panels when in the first position, and

a second position wherein the third paperboard panel at least partially covers the second paperboard panel, the second paperboard panel being disposed between the first and third paperboard panels when in the second position.

18. The secure card package of claim 17 , further comprising a sheet, the sheet comprising a first fold line and a second fold line, wherein the first, second, and third paperboard panels are formed on the sheet with the first and second paperboard panels joined at the first fold line and the first and third paperboard panels joined at the second fold line.

19. The secure card package of claim 18 , wherein the first paperboard panel further comprises an aperture, the card further comprises a data field disposed on the card, and the card is disposed such that the data field is viewable through the aperture.

20. The secure card package of claim 18 , wherein the third panel covers the aperture when in the first position of the range of motion.
