Abstract

An aircraft galley chiller is disclosed characterized by a cassette that inserts into the galley compartment above the beverage cart and houses an air return duct, a heat exchanger, a fan, and an air supply outlet. The chiller further includes a control valve for controlling the amount of air passing through the heat exchanger, and an electronic control box for control over the chiller, where the cassette is disposed between the beverage cart and a galley work deck.

Claims (17)

1. An aircraft galley trolley compartment cooling system, comprising:

a modular chiller configured for removable insertion into a trolley compartment disposed below a galley work deck such that an upper surface of the modular chiller is disposed beneath the galley work deck and a lower surface of the modular chiller is configured to be disposed adjacent to an upper surface of one or more trolleys housed within the trolley compartment, the modular chiller including a housing enclosing one or more chiller components, the one or more chiller components comprising

one or more air return ports,

a heat exchanger configured to chill air entering the modular chiller from the trolley compartment through the one or more air return ports, and

a fan coupled to the heat exchanger, the fan configured to direct air flow through the heat exchanger, wherein a fan speed is configured to be controlled by a controller such that adjustment of the fan speed causes adjustment of a volume of the air passing through the heat exchanger;

and

a plenum disposed against a rear wall of the galley trolley compartment, the plenum including an air return path leading from the bottom portion of the trolley compartment to the modular chiller.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular chiller further includes a connection block disposed on a rear surface of the modular chiller, the connection block having connectors configured to couple the modular chiller to one or more aircraft systems including at least one of an electrical connector, a condensate drain, a locating pin, and a liquid refrigerant input/output port.

3. The system of claim 2 , wherein the heat exchanger further includes a condensate collection tray disposed below the heat exchanger, wherein the condensate collection drain is configured to divert collected condensate toward the condensate drain.

4. The system of claim 2 , wherein the connectors to the one or more aircraft systems on the connection block coupling the modular chiller to the one or more aircraft systems are quick disconnect connections for aircraft line replacement units.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular chiller further includes a control valve coupled to the heat exchanger, the control valve configured to control a supply of liquid refrigerant to the heat exchanger.

6. The system of claim 5 , wherein the liquid refrigerant supplied to the heat exchanger by the control valve is poly-glycol water.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the controller is configured to control the speed of the fan based on sensor data received from a sensor disposed within the housing of the modular chiller.

8. The system of claim 1 , wherein the plenum further includes a plurality of apertures disposed on a surface of the plenum, the plurality of apertures configured to promote a substantially uniform air distribution around the one or more trolleys housed within the trolley compartment.

9. The system of claim 1 , wherein an upper portion of the plenum is configured to mate to the one or more air return ports of the modular chiller when removably inserted into the trolley compartment.

10. The system of claim 1 , wherein the modular chiller includes one or more air supply outlets disposed on a lower surface of the modular chiller, the one or more air outlets configured to distribute the chilled air around the one or more trolleys housed within the trolley compartment.

11. The system of claim 1 , wherein the heat exchanger includes a convergent supply duct configured to couple an outlet of the heat exchanger to the fan.
