Abstract

An access port for subcutaneous implantation is disclosed. Such an access port may comprise a body for capturing a septum for repeatedly inserting a needle therethrough into a cavity defined within the body. Further, the access port may include at least one feature structured and configured for identification of the access port subsequent to subcutaneous implantation. Methods of identifying a subcutaneously implanted access port are also disclosed. For example, a subcutaneously implanted access port may be provided and at least one feature of the subcutaneously implanted access port may be perceived. Further, the subcutaneously implanted access port may be identified in response to perceiving the at least one feature.

Claims (15)

1. A power injectable access port for providing subcutaneous access to a patient, comprising:

a septum having an upper surface and a bottom surface separated along a vertical axis of the port;

a body defining a cavity accessible by inserting a needle through the septum, the body including:

a first side surface from which an outlet stem extends;

a second side surface different from the first side surface, the second side surface having a concave portion extending along the vertical axis, at least a portion of the concave surface positioned at the same location along the vertical axis as at least a portion of the cavity; and

a bottom surface bounded by a bottom perimeter including a concave portion contiguous with the second side surface concave portion, the bottom surface including an identifier observable via imaging technology subsequent to implantation of the access port, the identifier identifying the access port as a power injectable port.

2. The power injectable access port according to claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a cap and a base, and wherein the base at least partially defines the second side surface concave portion and the cavity.

3. The power injectable access port according to claim 1 , wherein the body includes a third side surface having a concave portion contiguous with a second concave portion in the bottom perimeter.

4. The power injectable access port according to claim 3 , wherein the second side surface and the third side surface are positioned opposite of each other, and wherein a concavity of the second side surface is the same as a concavity of the third side surface.

5. The power injectable access port according to claim 3 , wherein a fourth side surface between the second side surface and the third side surface has a slope that extends at an angle with respect to the vertical axis.

6. The power injectable access port according to claim 5 , wherein the second side surface and the third side surface are positioned opposite of each other, and the fourth side surface and the first side surface are positioned opposite of each other.

7. The power injectable access port according to claim 1 , wherein the imaging technology is x-ray imaging technology.

8. The power injectable access port according to claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the bottom surface is metal and the identifier is an alphanumeric message etched in the metal portion.

9. The power injectable access port according to claim 8 , wherein the alphanumeric message includes the letters “C” and “T.”

10. The power injectable access port according to claim 1 , wherein the identifier is “CT”.
