Abstract

Multiple applications may be targeted via key/value data associated with a resource identified by a primary Uniform Resource Locator (“URL”). By parsing the key/value data, an alternative application for accessing the resource may be identified. When the alternative application is installed on a device, the alternative application may be invoked to access the resource.

Claims (28)

1. A computer-implemented method for invoking an application, the method comprising:

obtaining, by the computer, an indication to access a particular resource identified by a primary Uniform Resource Locator (“URL”);

parsing, by the computer, key/value data associated with said primary URL, said key/value data including at least one key/value pair;

determining, by the computer, whether said at least one key/value pair includes at least one alternative-application key/value pair identified according to at least one predetermined alternative-application key; and

when said at least one key/value pair is determined to include said at least one alternative-application key/value pair:

extracting, by the computer, a value string from said at least one alternative-application key/value pair;

identifying, by the computer based at least in part on said value string, an optionally-installed application for accessing said particular resource;

determining, by the computer, whether said optionally-installed application is installed; and

when said optionally-installed application is installed, invoking, by the computer, said optionally-installed application to access said particular resource.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying said optionally-installed application comprises identifying in said key/value data an application identifier according to which said optionally-installed application can be identified in an application-store application.

3. The method of claim 2 , further comprising, when said alternative-application is not installed: obtaining, based at least in part on said application identifier, an application-store URL corresponding to said optionally-installed application; and invoking said application-store application according to said application-store URL to install said optionally-installed application.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein invoking said optionally-installed application to access said particular resource comprises: determining an alternative-application URL according to said value string; and passing said alternative-application URL to said optionally-installed application.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein parsing said key/value data comprises parsing a key/value portion of said primary URL.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising invoking a standardly installed application to access said particular resource.

7. A computing apparatus comprising a processor and a memory having stored thereon instructions that when executed by the processor, configure the apparatus to perform the method of claim 1 .

8. A non-transient computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions that when executed by a processor, configure the processor to perform the method of claim 1 .

9. A computer-implemented method for enabling access to a particular resource via multiple applications, the method comprising:

obtaining, by the computer, a first Uniform Resource Locator (“URL”) that can be handled by a first application to access said particular resource on a remote client device, said first application being standardly installed on said remote client device;

obtaining, by the computer, a second URL that can be handled by an optionally-installed application to access said particular resource when said optionally-installed application is installed on said remote client device;

generating, by the computer, an alternative-application payload string identifying said optionally-installed application and including said second URL; obtaining, by the computer, at least one predetermined alternative-application key to indicate the presence of said second URL;

generating, by the computer, at least one key/value pair comprising said at least one predetermined alternative-application key and said alternative-application payload string; and

providing, by the computer, said at least one key/value pair to said remote client device in connection with said first URL to enable said remote client device to access said particular resource via at least one of said first application and said optionally-installed application.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein providing said at least one key/value pair comprises: inserting said at least one key/value pair into a key/value portion of said first URL to form an alternative-URL-encoded compound URL; and providing said alternative-URL-encoded compound URL to said remote client device.

11. The method of claim 9 , further comprising obtaining an application identifier according to which said optionally-installed application can be identified in an application-store application.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein generating said alternative-application payload string comprises encoding said application identifier into said alternative-application payload string.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein generating said at least one key/value pair further comprises generating a key/value pair comprising an application-information key and an application-information payload comprising said application identifier.

14. A computing apparatus comprising a processor and a memory having stored thereon instructions that when executed by the processor, configure the apparatus to perform the method of claim 9 .

15. A non-transient computer-readable storage medium having stored thereon instructions that when executed by a processor, configure the processor to perform the method of claim 9 .
