Abstract

The disclosure describes acrylate carrier resins, optionally, with a C/O of at least about 4, comprising a heterocycle comprising sulfur, exhibiting high charge and improved RH sensitivity, carrier compositions comprising the acrylate-coated carriers and developers comprising a toner and the acrylate-coated carrier.

Claims (20)

1. A toner carrier comprising a solid core coated with a resin comprising at least one first monomer having a structure as set forth in formula (I) or isomers thereof:

wherein R 1 is methyl or H; and R 2 is an aryl, a cyclic heteroalkyl, cyclic heteroalkylalkyl or a cyclic heteroalkylaryl comprising at least one sulfur atom, and wherein the resin has a carbon:oxygen (C/O) ratio of at least about 4.

2. The carrier of claim 1 , wherein R 1 is methyl.

3. The carrier of claim 1 , wherein R 2 is a C 5 -C 7 cyclic heteroalkyl.

4. The carrier of claim 1 , wherein R 2 is selected from the group consisting of dithietane, thietane, trithiane, dithiepane, trithiepane, dithiocane, trithiocane, thiolane, dithiolane, thiane, dithiane, thiepane and thiocane.

5. The carrier of claim 1 , wherein R 2 is thiane.

6. The carrier of claim 1 , wherein the aryl, cyclic heteroalkyl, cyclic heteroalkylalkyl or cyclic heteroalkylaryl comprises optional substituents.

7. The carrier of claim 1 , wherein said resin comprises at least one monomer having the structure as set forth in formula (II) or isomers thereof:

wherein R 1 is methyl or H.

8. The carrier of claim 7 , wherein R 1 is methyl.

9. The toner carrier of claim 1 , wherein said resin comprises at least one second monomer to form a copolymer, and optionally one or more of a carbon black, a surfactant, a wax or a colorant.

10. The toner carrier of claim 1 , wherein said solid core is magnetic.

11. The toner carrier of claim 1 , wherein said solid core is of a material selected from the group consisting of iron, steel, ferrites, magnetites, nickel and combinations thereof, and having an average particle size of from about 50 μm to about 500 μm in diameter.

12. The toner carrier of claim 9 , wherein the at least one second monomer forming the copolymer is selected from the group consisting of methylmethacrylate, cyclohexylmethacrylate, cyclopropyl acrylate, cyclobutyl acrylate, cyclopentyl acrylate, cyclohexyl acrylate, cyclopropyl methacrylate, cyclobutyl methacrylate, cyclopentyl methacrylate, isobornyl methacrylate, isobornyl acrylate, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, β-carboxyethyl acrylate, dimethylamino ethyl methacrylate, 2-(dimethylamino) ethyl methacrylate, diethylamino ethyl methacrylate, dimethylamino butyl methacrylate, methylamino ethyl methacrylate and combinations thereof.

13. The carrier claim 1 , wherein said resin comprises a number average molecular weight of from about 60,000 to about 400,000, a weight average molecular weight of from about 200,000 to about 800,000, or a glass transition temperature of from about 85° C. to about 140° C.

14. The toner carrier of claim 1 , wherein the resin is applied to said core as a dry powder.

15. The toner carrier of claim 14 , wherein said powder is applied by a process selected from the group consisting of cascade roll mixing, tumbling, milling, shaking, electrostatic powder cloud spraying, fluidized bed, electrostatic disc processing, electrostatic curtains and combinations thereof.

16. A developer comprising a toner and the toner carrier of claim 1 , wherein the toner comprises a latex resin, optionally a wax and optionally a colorant.

17. The developer of claim 16 , wherein said toner comprises at least one silica surface additive.

18. The developer of claim 16 , wherein said toner is an emulsion aggregation toner.
