Abstract

A pipe or tube article comprising an innermost layer made from a grafted polyolefin composition is disclosed which can provide long lifetime, highly abrasion-resistant pipes for mining and other transportation uses. Methods for preparing the article and transporting abrasive materials through the article are also described.

Claims (23)

1. A method comprising laying up a pre-formed film or sheet into the inner surface of a preformed metal or plastic pipe to produce a film- or sheet-lined pipe wherein

the film or sheet is a monolayer or multilayer film or sheet and comprises or is produced from a grafted polyolefin composition;

the film or sheet has a thickness of about 0.001 to about 102 mm; and

the grafted polyolefin in the grafted polyolefin composition is produced by grafting a parent polyolefin with an α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride;

the parent polyolefin comprises repeat units derived from ethylene and a C 3-20 α-olefin, has a density of about 0.88 g/cc (ASTM D-792) or less, and has a Shore A hardness of about 96 or less (ASTM D2240, ISO 868).

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising heating the lined pipe to a temperature above the softening point of the grafted polyolefin in the grafted polyolefin composition and allowing the pipe to cool to produce the pipe.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the parent polyolefin has a density of about 0.84 to about 0.88 g/cc.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the grafted polyolefin in the grafted polyolefin composition has a Shore A hardness of about 80 or less.

5. The method of claim 3 wherein the α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride is selected from the group consisting of maleic anhydride, maleic acid, fumaric acid, acrylic acid, methacrylic acid, itaconic anhydride, itaconic acid, citraconic acid, citraconic anhydride, crotonic acid, crotonic anhydride, methyl crotonic acid, cinnamic acid, endo-bicyclo-[2.2.1]-5-heptene-2,3-dicarboxylic acid, endo-bicyclo-[2.2.1]-5-heptene-2,3-dicarboxylic anhydride, cis-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic acid, cis-4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydride and mixtures thereof.

6. The method of claim 5 wherein the α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride is maleic anhydride.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the grafted polyolefin composition further comprises filler.

8. The method of claim 6 further comprising attaching the lined pipe to an outer layer comprising a fiber reinforcement material, rubber, elastomer, thermoplastic elastomer, acid terpolymer, ionomer terpolymer, or combinations of two or more thereof; and the fiber reinforcement material comprises fiber and optionally a thermoset resin.

9. The method of claim 6 further comprising attaching the lined-pipe to an outermost layer, and the outermost layer is a metal pipe made of carbon steel, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, aluminum, or copper, or alloys of two or more thereof.

10. The method of claim 8 further comprising attaching the pipe containing the outer layer to an outermost layer; and the outermost layer is a metal pipe made of carbon steel, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, aluminum, or copper, or alloys of two or more thereof.

11. A method comprising pulling or inserting a film or sheet into the interior surface of a metal pipe to produce a film- or sheet-lined pipe wherein the film or sheet is the film or sheet is as recited in claim 1 and the metal pipe is made of carbon steel, steel, stainless steel, cast iron, galvanized steel, aluminum, or copper, or alloys of two or more thereof.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein the α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride is maleic anhydride.

13. The method of claim 12 wherein the film- or sheet-lined pipe further comprises an outer layer; the outer layer comprising a fiber reinforcement material, rubber, elastomer, thermoplastic elastomer, acid terpolymer, ionomer terpolymer, or combinations of two or more thereof; and the fiber reinforcement material comprises fiber and optionally a thermoset resin.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the fiber is in the form of filament, warp yarn, unidirectional sheet, mat, cloth, knitted cloth, paper, non-woven fabric, woven fabric, or mixtures of two or more thereof.

15. The method of claim 13 wherein the α,β-ethylenically unsaturated carboxylic acid or anhydride is maleic anhydride.

16. The method of claim 15 wherein the grafted polyolefin composition further comprises filler.

17. The method of claim 15 wherein the lined pipe further comprises an intermediate layer between the outer layer and the inner surface of the metal pipe; the intermediate layer comprises a fiber reinforcement material, rubber, elastomer, thermoplastic elastomer, acid terpolymer, ionomer terpolymer, or combinations of two or more thereof; and the fiber reinforcement material comprises fiber and optionally a thermoset resin.

18. The method of claim 11 further comprising transporting an abrasive particulate or slurry stream from one end of the pipe to the other end of the pipe.

19. The method of claim 17 further comprising transporting an abrasive particulate or slurry stream from one end of the pipe to the other end of the pipe, wherein the abrasive particulate or slurry stream is oil sand.
