Abstract

A system and method support the exchange of media between friends, family members, and 3rd party media providers over a closed and secure media exchange network. The media may include, for example, digital video, digital audio, digital images, digital data, or any form of digital information.

Claims (35)

1. A system supporting communication of media, comprising:

at least one processor operably coupled to a first display device in a first location;

a first storage that stores the media and is coupled to the at least one processor;

the at least one processor configured to, at least:

render a user interface on the first display device having a first network address in the first location, the user interface having at least one view comprising a representation of media stored on the first storage and available for consumption, the user interface configured to support delivery of the media to a second display device having a second network address at a second location, wherein the user interface is configured to present the media for selection within a list of available media digital files being stored on the first storage and available for consumption; and

communicate with a media server configured to maintain a user defined association of the first and second network addresses and receive a request that identifies one of the first and second network addresses from the association and respond by identifying the other one of the associated first and second network addresses to support delivery via a communication network of the media from the first storage to a second storage of the second display device for consumption by the second display device.

2. The system of claim 1 , wherein the first network address is one of an Internet protocol (IP) address, a media access control (MAC) address, or an electronic serial number (ESN).

The system of claim 1 , wherein the communication network comprises one or more of a cable infrastructure, a satellite network infrastructure, a digital subscriber line (DSL) infrastructure, an Internet infrastructure, an intranet infrastructure, a wired infrastructure, or a wireless infrastructure.

4. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media comprises one or more of audio, a still image, video, or data.

5. The system of claim 1 , wherein the media comprises real-time video.

6. The system of claim 1 , wherein consumption comprises one or more of playing audio, displaying a still image, displaying video, or displaying data.

7. The system of claim 1 , wherein the user interface is configured to support at least one media channel.

8. The system of claim 7 , where the at least one media channel comprises a user-selected sequence of media for consumption at one or both of the first location or the second location.

9. The system of claim 7 , wherein supporting at least one media channel by the user interface comprises creation of the at least one media channel, including the display of a graphical representation of the at least one media channel on the user interface.

10. A method comprising:

rendering, on a first display device at a first location, a user interface having at least one view comprising a representation of media stored on a first storage of the first display device at a first network address and available for consumption, the user interface supporting delivery of the media over a communication network;

receiving a selection of the media, via the user interface, from a list of available media digital files being stored on the first storage and available for consumption;

maintaining a user defined association of the first network address and a second network address of a second storage at a second location, the second storage supporting consumption of the media by a second display device in the second location, wherein the selection of the media further identifies one of the first and second network addresses from the association;

responding to the selection by identifying the other one of the associated first and second network addresses to support delivery via a communication network of the media from the first storage to the second storage for consumption by the second display device; and

delivering, via the communication network, the media from the first storage to the second location for consumption by the second display device at the second location.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first network address comprises one of an Internet protocol (IP) address, a media access control (MAC) address, or an electronic serial number (ESN).

The method of claim 10 , wherein the communication network comprises one or more of a cable infrastructure, a satellite network infrastructure, a digital subscriber line (DSL) infrastructure, an Internet infrastructure, an intranet infrastructure, a wired infrastructure, or a wireless infrastructure.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the communication network is the Internet.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the media comprises one or more of audio, a still image, video, or data.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the media comprises realtime video.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein consumption comprises one or more of playing audio, displaying a still image, displaying video, or displaying data.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the user interface supports at least one media channel, wherein the at least one media channel comprises a user-selected sequence of media for consumption at one or both of the first location or the second location.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein supporting at least one media channel by the user interface comprises creation of the at least one media channel, including a display of a graphical representation of the at least one media channel on the user interface.

19. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first display device comprises a television.

20. A method comprising:

rendering, on a remote display device at a remote location, a user interface having at least one view comprising a representation of available media stored on a first storage of a first display device, the user interface supporting delivery of the available media over a communication network;

receiving a selection of a first media content, via the user interface, from a list of available media digital files being stored on the first storage and available for consumption, the list including transferred media content from a personal computing device to a first storage of a first display device at a first location, wherein the first storage is associated with a first network address;

maintaining a user defined association of the first network address and a second network address of a second storage at the remote location, the second storage supporting consumption of the available media by the remote display device in the remote location, wherein the selection of the first media content further identifies one of the first and second network addresses from the association;

responding to the selection of the first media content by identifying the other one of the associated first and second network addresses to support delivery via a communication network of the available media from the first storage to the second storage for consumption by the remote display device; and

delivering, via the communication network, the available media from the first storage to the remote location for consumption by the remote display device at the remote location.
