Abstract

Acoustic energy is received at a lighting apparatus to create acoustic data, and speech recognition is performed on the acoustic data to determine one or more words. A message based on the acoustic data is sent across a network from the lighting apparatus.

Claims (70)

1. A method for controlling a lighting apparatus, the method comprising:

receiving acoustic energy at a lighting apparatus to create acoustic data;

performing speech recognition on the acoustic data to determine one or more words and

sending a message from the lighting apparatus across a network, wherein the message is based on the acoustic data.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the lighting apparatus comprises a controller;

the performing speech recognition is done by the controller; and

the message includes the one or more words.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising controlling an aspect of the lighting apparatus based, at least in part, on the one or more words, wherein the message comprises information about the controlling of the aspect of the lighting apparatus.

4. The method of claim 1 , further comprising receiving the message at a computer;

wherein the performing speech recognition is done by the computer.

5. The method of claim 4 , further comprising sending a control message from the computer to the lighting apparatus to control an aspect of the lighting apparatus.

6. The method of claim 4 , further comprising compressing at least some of the acoustic data to create compressed acoustic data, wherein the message comprises the compressed acoustic data.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the performing speech recognition utilizes an untrained speech recognition algorithm.

8. An article of manufacture comprising a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having instructions stored thereon that, if executed by a processor, result in:

receiving acoustic energy from a microphone in a lighting apparatus to create acoustic data;

performing speech recognition on the acoustic data to determine one or more words; and

sending a message through a network adapter in the lighting apparatus, wherein the message is based on the acoustic data.

9. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the message includes the one or more words.

10. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, if executed by the processor, further result in:

compressing at least some of the acoustic data to create compressed acoustic data;

wherein the message comprises the compressed acoustic data.

11. The article of manufacture of claim 8 , wherein the instructions, if executed by the processor, further result in:

controlling an aspect of the lighting apparatus based, at least in part, on the one or more words;

wherein the message comprises information about the controlling of the aspect of the lighting apparatus.

12. The article of manufacture of claim 11 , further comprising:

a socket with electrical contacts to accept a separate visible light source;

a controller coupled to the non-transitory computer readable storage medium to execute the instructions stored thereon, and configured to control power at the socket;

the network adapter coupled to the controller; and

the microphone coupled to the controller;

wherein the aspect of the lighting apparatus is an on/off state of the separate visible light source.

13. The article of manufacture of claim 11 , further comprising:

a visible light source capable of outputting 25 lumens or more of luminous flux;

a controller coupled to the non-transitory computer readable storage medium to execute the instructions stored thereon, and configured to control an on/off state of the visible light source;

the network adapter coupled to the controller; and

the microphone coupled to the controller;

wherein the aspect of the lighting apparatus is the on/off state of the visible light source.

14. A lighting apparatus comprising:

a controller comprising a network adapter;

circuitry coupled to the controller to control an on/off state of a visible light source under command of the controller; and

an acoustic energy detector coupled to the controller;

wherein the controller is configured to:

receive acoustic data from the acoustic energy detector;

perform speech recognition on the acoustic data to determine one or more words; and

send a message through a network adapter, wherein the message is based on the acoustic data.

15. The lighting apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the circuitry comprises a socket with electrical contacts to accept a separate visible light source.

16. The lighting apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising at least one LED;

wherein the visible light source comprises the at least one LED; and

the circuitry comprises an LED driver circuit.

17. The lighting apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the network adapter is configured to communicate over a wireless network or a power line network.

18. The lighting apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the message includes the one or more words.

19. The lighting apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the controller is further configured to compress at least some of the acoustic data to create compressed acoustic data; and

wherein the message comprises the compressed acoustic data.

20. The lighting apparatus of claim 14 wherein the controller is further configured to utilize an untrained speech recognition algorithm to perform speech recognition.

21. A home automation system comprising:

a lighting apparatus comprising a visible light source, an acoustic energy detector, and circuitry to send acoustic data from the acoustic energy detector over a network; and

a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having computer executable program code embodied therewith, the computer readable program code comprising:

computer readable program code configured to receive the acoustic data from the lighting apparatus over the network;

computer readable program code configured to perform speech recognition on the acoustic data to determine one or more words; and

computer readable program code configured to send a control message over the network to a networked device, wherein the control message is based on the acoustic data.

22. The system of claim 21 , wherein the networked device is determined based on the one or more words.

23. The system of claim 21 , wherein the networked device is the lighting apparatus, and the control message comprises a command to set an on/off state of the visible light source.

24. The system of claim 21 , wherein the acoustic data is compressed.
