Abstract

A card actuated automated banking machine ( 152,198,200 ) includes a plurality of transaction function devices. The transaction function devices include a card reader ( 170 ), a printer ( 174 ), a bill dispenser ( 176 ), a display ( 182 ), a check imaging device ( 186 ), and at least one processor ( 190 ). The machine is operative, responsive to receiving a check and certification data, to dispense cash in exchange for the check. The person presenting the check to the machine need not provide user identifying inputs through input devices of the machine in order to receive cash for the check. Furthermore, prior to accepting the check as a payment, the person can communicate with a least one computer ( 204 ) through at least one consumer interface device ( 208 ) to verify that the check is payable for the check amount.

Claims (147)

1. A system comprising:

an automated banking machine operable responsive at least in part to data read from data bearing records,

wherein the machine is associated with a financial institution,

wherein the financial institution is associated with a computer system,

wherein the machine includes at least one input device,

wherein the at least one input device includes at least one data reader,

wherein the at least one data reader includes a card reader,

 wherein the card reader is operable to read account data that is usable to identify a customer account,

wherein the at least one input device is operable to receive customer verification data,

wherein the at least one input device is operable to receive manually inputted data,

wherein the machine is operable to allow an authorized customer of the machine who has a financial account with the financial institution, to use the machine to carry out a check deposit transaction involving a customer account identified through use of account data read by the card reader, responsive at least in part to computer-determined correspondence between the customer account and customer verification data received by the at least one input device,

wherein the machine is operable to cause the customer account to be assessed a value associated with the check deposit transaction,

wherein the machine includes a cash dispenser,

wherein the cash dispenser is operative to selectively dispense cash stored in the machine to authorized customers of the machine,

wherein the machine includes at least one display,

wherein the at least one display is operable to output display screens to customers of the machine,

wherein the machine includes a check reader,

wherein the check reader comprises a check imager,

wherein the check imager is operable to produce image data corresponding to visual appearance of a financial check received by the machine,

 wherein the image data includes the at least one image,

 wherein the machine is operable to resolve a check amount from the at least one image,

 wherein the machine is operable to resolve micr line data from the at least one image,

wherein the machine is operable during a check deposit transaction to communicate transaction data to the computer system which causes a cash value corresponding to the check amount to be deposited into the customer account,

wherein the transaction data includes customer data,

wherein the customer data includes the account data read by the card reader,

wherein the customer data includes the customer verification data received by the at least one input device,

wherein the transaction data includes deposit data,

wherein the deposit data includes the at least one image,

wherein the deposit data includes the resolved check amount,

wherein the deposit data includes the resolved micr line data,

wherein the deposit data includes a manually inputted check amount value received by the at least one input device,

a mobile communication device affiliated with the financial institution,

wherein the mobile communication device includes a check imaging device,

wherein the check imaging device is operable to capture at least one check image of at least a portion of a financial check,

wherein the mobile communication device includes at least one processor,

wherein the at least one processor is operable to allow a user of the mobile communication device who has user account with the financial institution to carry out a check deposit transaction,

wherein the at least one processor is operable to resolve from the at least one check image, a check amount,

wherein the at least one processor is operable to resolve from the at least one check image, micr line data,

wherein the at least one processor is operable to allow the mobile communication device to receive a manually inputted value corresponding to a check amount,

wherein the at least one processor is operable to cause check transaction data to be wirelessly sent to the computer system,

 wherein the check transaction data includes user data,

 wherein the user data includes user account data corresponding to the user account,

 wherein the user data includes user verification data which allows the user to carry out the check deposit transaction on the user account,

 wherein the check transaction data includes check deposit data,

 wherein the check deposit data includes the at least one check image,

 wherein the check deposit data includes the resolved check amount,

 wherein the check deposit data includes the resolved micr line data,

 wherein the check deposit data includes the manually inputted value corresponding to the check amount,

 wherein sending of the check transaction data causes a cash value corresponding to the check amount to be deposited into the user account.

2. The system according to claim 1 wherein the machine is respectively associated with at least one computer,

wherein the at least one data reader includes a biometric reader,

wherein the at least one computer is operable during a user transaction session to:

cause card data to be read from a card through operation of the card reader, and then cause the read card data to be compared with card information stored in at least one authorization data store, and

cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader, and then cause the read biometric data to be compared with biometric information in the at least one authorization data store;

wherein the at least one computer is operable to authorize a machine user to carry out a cash withdrawal transaction that involves operation of the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to:

computer-determined correspondence between the read card data and the card information,

computer-determined correspondence between the read biometric data and the biometric information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the read card data and the read biometric data.

3. The system according to claim 1 wherein the mobile communication device comprises a mobile phone, wherein the check imaging device comprises a phone camera, and wherein the phone camera is operable to capture at least one image of a paper check.

4. Apparatus comprising:

a mobile communication device,

wherein the mobile communication device includes an imaging device,

wherein the imaging device is operable to capture at least one check image of at least a portion of a prepared financial check which indicates a check amount,

wherein the mobile communication device includes at least one processor,

wherein the at least one processor includes check deposit programming affiliated with a financial institution,

wherein the programming allows a customer having an account with the financial institution to use the mobile communication device to carry out a check deposit transaction,

 wherein the programming causes the at least one processor to resolve the check amount from the at least one check image,

 wherein the programming enables the mobile communication device to wirelessly send transaction data to a computer system associated with the financial institution,

 wherein the transaction data includes customer data,

 wherein the customer data includes account data corresponding to the account,

 wherein the customer data includes customer verification data which allows the customer to carry out the check deposit transaction on the account,

 wherein the transaction data includes deposit data,

 wherein the deposit data includes the at least one check image,

 wherein the deposit data includes the check amount resolved by the at least one processor,

 wherein sending of the transaction data causes a cash value corresponding to the check amount to be deposited into the account.

5. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the financial institution is associated with a plurality of automated banking machines,

wherein a respective machine includes a cash dispenser, a card reader, a biometric reader, and a machine controller,

wherein the machine controller is operative during a user transaction session to:

cause card data to be read from a card through operation of the card reader, and then cause the read card data to be compared with card information stored in at least one authorization data store, and

cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader, and then cause the read biometric data to be compared with biometric information stored in the at least one authorization data store;

wherein the machine controller is operative to carry out for an authorized machine user, a requested check cashing transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to:

computer-determined correspondence between the read card data and the stored card information,

computer-determined correspondence between the read biometric data and the stored biometric information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the read card data and the read biometric data.

6. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the programming enables the mobile communication device to receive a manually inputted value corresponding to the check amount, and wherein the deposit data includes the manually inputted value.

7. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the programming causes the at least one processor to resolve from the at least one image, check data corresponding to micr line data,

wherein the deposit data includes the check data resolved by the at least one processor.

8. The apparatus according to claim 4 wherein the mobile communication device comprises a mobile phone, wherein the imaging device comprises a camera, and wherein the camera is operable to capture at least one check image of a paper check.

9. The apparatus according to claim 4

wherein the programming enables the mobile communication device to wirelessly receive an electronic check deposit transaction receipt which includes the at least one check image.

10. Apparatus comprising:

a mobile communication device,

wherein the mobile communication device includes an imaging device,

wherein the imaging device is operable to capture at least one image of at least a portion of a prepared financial check which indicates a check amount,

wherein the mobile communication device includes at least one processor,

wherein the at least one processor includes check deposit programming affiliated with a financial institution,

wherein the programming allows a customer having an account with the financial institution to use the mobile communication device to carry out a check deposit transaction,

 wherein the programming enables the mobile communication device to receive a manually inputted value corresponding to the check amount,

 wherein the programming enables the mobile communication device to wirelessly send transaction data to a computer system associated with the financial institution,

 wherein the transaction data includes customer data,

 wherein the customer data includes account data corresponding to the account,

 wherein the customer data includes customer verification data which allows the customer to carry out the check deposit transaction on the account,

 wherein the transaction data includes deposit data,

 wherein the deposit data includes the at least one image,

 wherein the deposit data includes the manually inputted value,

 wherein sending of the transaction data causes a cash value corresponding to the check amount to be deposited into the account.

11. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the financial institution is associated with a plurality of automated banking machines;

wherein a respective machine includes a cash dispenser, a card reader, a biometric reader, and a machine controller,

wherein the machine controller is operative during a user transaction session to:

cause card data to be read from a card through operation of the card reader, and then cause the read card data to be compared with card information stored in at least one authorization data store, and

cause biometric data to be read through operation of the biometric reader, and then cause the read biometric data to be compared with biometric information stored in the at least one authorization data store;

wherein the machine controller is operative to carry out for an authorized machine user, a requested check cashing transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to:

computer-determined correspondence between the read card data and the stored card information,

computer-determined correspondence between the read biometric data and the stored biometric information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the read card data and the read biometric data.

12. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the programming causes the at least one processor to resolve the check amount from the at least one check image, and wherein the deposit data includes the check amount resolved by the at least one processor.

13. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the programming causes the at least one processor to resolve from the at least one image, check data corresponding to micr line data,

wherein the deposit data includes the check data resolved by the at least one processor.

14. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the mobile communication device comprises a mobile phone, wherein the imaging device comprises a camera, and wherein the camera is operable to capture at least one check image of a paper check.

15. The apparatus according to claim 10 wherein the programming enables the mobile communication device to wirelessly receive an electronic check deposit transaction receipt which includes the at least one check image.

16. At least one computer readable medium comprising non-transitory computer executable instructions executable in at least one processor of a mobile communication device that includes an imaging device, wherein the instructions include check deposit programming affiliated with a financial institution, wherein the programming allows a customer having an account with the financial institution to use the mobile communication device to carry out a check deposit transaction method that comprises:

(a) operating the mobile communication device to capture at least one image of at least a portion of a prepared financial check which indicates a check amount;

(b) operating the mobile communication device to receive a manually inputted value corresponding to the check amount; and

(c) operating the mobile communication device to wirelessly send transaction data to a computer system associated with the financial institution,

wherein the transaction data includes customer data,

wherein the customer data includes account data corresponding to the account,

wherein the customer data includes customer verification data which allows the customer to carry out the check deposit transaction on the account,

wherein the transaction data includes deposit data,

wherein the deposit data includes the at least one image captured in (a),

wherein the deposit data includes the value received in (b),

wherein sending of the transaction data causes a cash value corresponding to the check amount to be deposited into the account.

17. The at least one computer readable medium according to claim 16 wherein the financial institution is associated with a plurality of automated banking machines,

wherein a respective machine includes a cash dispenser, a card reader, a biometric reader, and a machine controller,

and further comprising:

(d) operating the machine controller to cause the card reader to read card data;

(e) operating the machine controller to cause the biometric reader to read biometric data;

(f) operating the machine controller to carry out for an authorized machine user, a requested check cashing transaction involving the cash dispenser, responsive at least in part to:

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (d) and stored card information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the biometric data read in (e) and stored biometric information, and

computer-determined correspondence between the card data read in (d) and the biometric data read in (e).

18. The at least one computer readable medium according to claim 16 wherein the programming causes the at least one processor to resolve the check amount from the at least one check image, and further comprising:

(d) operating the mobile communication device to resolve the check amount from the at least one check image captured in (a);

wherein in (c) the deposit data includes the check amount resolved in (d).

19. The at least one computer readable medium according to claim 16 and further comprising:

(d) prior to (c), operating the mobile communication device to resolve from the at least one image captured in (a), check data corresponding to micr line data,

wherein in (c) the deposit data includes the check data resolved in (d).

20. The at least one computer readable medium according to claim 16 wherein the mobile communication device comprises a mobile phone, wherein (a), (b), and (c) include operating the mobile phone.
