Abstract

A method, apparatus and system for modeling a fault surface in a subsurface region. A direction may be determined in which a first portion of the subsurface region being on one side of the fault surface has moved relative to a second portion of the subsurface region being on the other side of the fault surface. A model of the fault surface may be generated having substantially no protrusions in the determined direction. A visualization of the model of the generated fault surface may be displayed.

Claims (37)

1. A method for modeling a fault surface in a subsurface region using measured data, the method comprising:

determining, by a processor, a direction of sliding in which a first portion of the subsurface region being on one side of the fault surface has moved relative to a second portion of the subsurface region being on the other side of the fault surface;

for the fault surface estimated to have at least one protrusion in the direction of sliding, replacing a first gradient field of the fault surface that is not substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding with a second gradient field of the fault surface that is substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding;

generating, by the processor, a model of the fault surface using the second gradient field of the fault surface that is substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding, by which protrusions are permitted in a direction orthogonal to the direction of sliding, and not permitted in the direction of sliding; and

displaying a visualization of the model of the generated fault surface in the subsurface region.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein protrusions comprise a local maximum or minimum of the surface topography.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the model of the fault surface has one or more protrusions in a direction orthogonal to the direction of sliding.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the direction of sliding is represented by a throw vector field including vectors tangent to the surface of the fault surface.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the vector field is stored in a computer memory.

6. The method of claim 4 , comprising modeling the fault surface using a scalar function and wherein the second gradient field of the scalar function is orthogonal to the direction of the throw vector field.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the scalar function is a function of distance to the fault surface.

8. The method of claim 6 , wherein the modeled fault surface is oriented based on an average gradient of the scalar function along the fault surface.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the direction of sliding is constant along the fault surface.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the direction of sliding changes along the fault surface.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the modeled fault surface approximates a surface that includes a set of sampling points.

12. The method of claim 1 , comprising:

when one or more of the sampling points indicate a protrusion in the direction of sliding, removing the one or more sampling points from the set of sampling points; and

generating a second model of the fault surface that approximates a surface that includes a set of sampling points in which the one or more sampling points are removed.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the model generated by the processor allows the geological structures on either side of the fault surface to slide relative to each other without obstruction.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein the model of the fault surface is an implicit model.

15. A system comprising:

a memory to store a subsurface geological model;

a processor configured to model a fault surface in a subsurface region using measured data by:

determining a direction of sliding in which a first portion of the subsurface region being on one side of the fault surface has moved relative to a second portion of the subsurface region being on the other side of the fault surface; and

for the fault surface estimated to have at least one protrusion in the direction of sliding, replacing a first gradient field of the fault surface that is not substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding with a second gradient field of the fault surface that is substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding;

generating a model of the fault surface using the second gradient field of the fault surface that is substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding, by which protrusions are permitted in a direction orthogonal to the direction of sliding, and not permitted in the direction of sliding; and

a display to display a visualization of the model of the generated fault surface in the subsurface region.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the model of the fault surface has one or more protrusions in a direction orthogonal to the direction of sliding.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is to represent the direction of sliding by a throw vector field including vectors tangent to the surface of the fault surface.

18. The system of claim 15 , wherein the processor is to approximate the modeled fault surface by a surface that includes a set of sampling points.

19. The system of claim 15 , wherein when one or more of the sampling points indicates a protrusion in the direction of sliding, the processor is to remove the one or more sampling points from the set of sampling points and generate a second model of the fault surface that approximates a surface that includes a set of sampling points in which the one or more sampling points are removed.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the model generated by the processor allows the geological structures on either side of the fault surface to slide relative to each other without obstruction.

21. A non-transitory computer readable medium comprising instructions which when implemented in a processor of a computing system having a display cause the system to model a fault surface in a subsurface region using measured data by:

determining a direction of sliding in which a first portion of the subsurface region being on one side of the fault surface has moved relative to a second portion of the subsurface region being on the other side of the fault surface;

for the fault surface estimated to have at least one protrusion in the direction of sliding, replacing a first gradient field of the fault surface that is not substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding with a second gradient field of the fault surface that is substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding;

generating a model of the fault surface using the second gradient field of the fault surface that is substantially orthogonal to the direction of sliding, by which protrusions are permitted in a direction orthogonal to the direction of sliding, and not permitted in the direction of sliding; and

displaying a visualization of the model of the generated fault surface in the subsurface region.
