Abstract

A method comprising determining to provide a notification to a user, the notification being associated with notification content, determining a cognitive load associated with the notification content, and determining an invocation input associated with the notification based, at least in part on the cognitive load is disclosed.

Claims (49)

1. An apparatus, comprising:

at least one processor;

at least one memory including computer program code, the memory and the computer program code configured to, working with the processor, cause the apparatus to perform at least the following:

determining that an event has occurred that is associated with content;

generating a notification that signifies the event;

identifying at least a portion of the content to be notification content associated with the notification;

determining a cognitive load of the notification content;

determining an invocation input associated with the notification to verify an attentiveness of a user based, at least in part on the cognitive load such that complexity of the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load, wherein the complexity of the invocation input is based at least on an amount of the identified notification content, the invocation input being an input for selecting the notification in a manner that invokes display of, at least part of, the notification content;

causing display of the notification;

receiving an indication of a user input associated with the notification;

determining that the user input corresponds with, at least part of, the invocation input; and

causing display of, at least part of, the notification content in response to the determination that the user input corresponds with the invocation input.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cognitive load is a value that reflects an amount of cognitive work associated with the user understanding the notification content.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the cognitive load is indicative of visual distraction associated with visual representation of the notification content.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein a duration of one or more parts of the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the invocation input comprises a movement part, and wherein the movement part corresponds with, at least part of, a movement of the notification representation.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the invocation input comprises a movement part, and wherein the movement part comprises a plurality of movement parts to be performed in a designated sequence, and wherein a number of movement parts comprised by the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the invocation input is associated with a cognitive burden to the user, the cognitive burden being proportional to the cognitive load.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 , wherein the cognitive burden is an attentiveness level that is a threshold value indicative of a user's cognitive ability to perceive notification content indicated by the cognitive load.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the apparatus comprises a display, and causing display of, at least part of, the notification content comprises display of, at least part of, the notification content on the display.

10. A method comprising:

determining that an event has occurred that is associated with content;

generating a notification that signifies the event;

identifying at least a portion of the content to be notification content associated with the notification;

determining a cognitive load of the notification content;

determining an invocation input associated with the notification to verify an attentiveness of a user based, at least in part on the cognitive load such that complexity of the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load, wherein the complexity of the invocation input is based at least on an amount of the identified notification content, the invocation input being an input for selecting the notification in a manner that invokes display of, at least part of, the notification content;

causing display of the notification;

receiving an indication of a user input associated with the notification;

determining that the user input corresponds with, at least part of, the invocation input; and

causing display of, at least part of, the notification content in response to the determination that the user input corresponds with the invocation input.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the cognitive load is a value that reflects an amount of cognitive work associated with the user understanding the notification content.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the cognitive load is indicative of visual distraction associated with visual representation of the notification content.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein a duration of one or more parts of the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the invocation input comprises a movement part, and wherein the movement part corresponds with, at least part of, a movement of the notification representation.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the invocation input comprises a movement part, and wherein the movement part comprises a plurality of movement parts to be performed in a designated sequence, and wherein a number of movement parts comprised by the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the invocation input is associated with a cognitive burden to the user, the cognitive burden being proportional to the cognitive load.

17. At least one non-transitory computer-readable medium encoded with instructions that, when executed by a computer, perform:

determining that an event has occurred that is associated with content;

generating a notification that signifies the event;

identifying at least a portion of the content to be notification content associated with the notification;

determining a cognitive load of the notification content;

determining an invocation input associated with the notification to verify an attentiveness of a user based, at least in part on the cognitive load such that complexity of the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load, wherein the complexity of the invocation input is based at least on an amount of the identified notification content, the invocation input being an input for selecting the notification in a manner that invokes display of, at least part of, the notification content;

causing display of the notification;

receiving an indication of a user input associated with the notification;

determining that the user input corresponds with, at least part of, the invocation input; and

causing display of, at least part of, the notification content in response to the determination that the user input corresponds with the invocation input.

18. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the cognitive load is a value that reflects an amount of cognitive work associated with the user understanding the notification content.

19. The medium of claim 17 , wherein the cognitive load is indicative of visual distraction associated with visual representation of the notification content.

20. The medium of claim 17 , wherein duration of one or more parts of the invocation input is directly proportional to the cognitive load.
