Abstract

A method for producing hydrocarbons from biomass is provided. The method involves supplying a feed stream; supplying a heated hydrocarbon solvent; combining the feed stream and the heated hydrocarbon solvent to produce a reactor feed, and hydrodeoxygenating the reactor feed to produce hydrocarbons; where the feed stream includes a synthetic polymer as well as biomass having fatty acids, glycerides, or combinations thereof.

Claims (38)

1. A method for producing hydrocarbons from biomass, comprising:

supplying a feed stream at a temperature from about 140° F. to about 240° F.;

supplying a heated hydrocarbon solvent at a temperature from about 500° F. to about 800° F.;

combining the feed stream and the heated hydrocarbon solvent to produce a reactor feed at a reactor feed temperature; and

hydrodeoxygenating the reactor feed in a reactor at a reactor temperature to produce hydrocarbons;

wherein

the feed stream comprises a synthetic polymer and biomass having fatty acids, glycerides, or combinations thereof; and

the heated hydrocarbon solvent provides the heat for achieving the reactor feed temperature and the reactor temperature.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feed stream comprises a member from the group consisting of animal fats, poultry oil, soybean oil, canola oil, rapeseed oils, palm oil, palm kernel oil, jatropha oil, castor oil, camelina oil, algae oil, seaweed oil, halophile oils, rendered fats, restaurant greases, brown grease, yellow grease, waste industrial frying oils, fish oils, and tall oil.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass comprises waste from a municipality, industrial operations, or both.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the biomass comprises a member selected from the group consisting of waste vegetable oils, restaurant greases, trap grease from municipalities, waste industrial frying oils, and spent oils from industrial packaged food operations.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synthetic polymer is a component of plastic film packaging.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the feed stream comprises more than one synthetic polymer.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the more than one synthetic polymer comprise polyethylene.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hydrocarbons comprise n-paraffins within the C 11 to C 24 range.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hydrocarbons possess no detectable oxygenates.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the hydrodeoxygenation step comprises passing the feed stream through a first catalyst bed and a second catalyst bed.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first catalyst bed comprises a catalyst that contains between about 1 wt % to about 10 wt % molybdenum, tungsten, or copper.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first catalyst bed contains between about 1 wt % to about 6 wt % molybdenum, tungsten, or copper.

13. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first catalyst bed contains about 3 wt % molybdenum, tungsten, or copper.

14. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first catalyst bed comprises a catalyst with a total pore surface area between about 60 m 2 /g to about 300 m 2 /g.

15. The method of claim 10 , wherein the first catalyst bed comprises a monometallic catalyst.

16. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second catalyst bed comprises a bimetallic catalyst.

17. The method of claim 10 , wherein the second catalyst bed comprises CoMo, NiMo, or NiW.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising hydroisomerizing at least a portion of the hydrocarbons.

19. The method of claim 18 , wherein the hydrocarbons comprise renewable diesel.

20. The method of claim 1 , further comprising hydrocracking at least a portion of the hydrocarbons.

21. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synthetic polymer has a melting point below the temperature of the feed stream.

22. The method of claim 1 , wherein the synthetic polymer is polyethylene.

23. The method of claim 1 , wherein the reactor feed temperature is from about 400° F. to about 700° F.

24. A method for producing hydrocarbons from biomass, comprising:

supplying a feed stream;

supplying a heated hydrocarbon solvent;

combining the feed stream and the heated hydrocarbon solvent to produce a reactor feed at a reactor feed temperature; and

hydrodeoxygenating the reactor feed in a reactor at a reactor temperature to produce hydrocarbons;

wherein

the feed stream comprises a synthetic polymer and biomass having fatty acids, glycerides, or combinations thereof; and

the heated hydrocarbon solvent provides the heat for achieving the reactor feed temperature and the reactor temperature.
