Abstract

A robotic controller for autonomous calibration and inspection of two or more solar surfaces wherein the robotic controller includes a drive system to position itself near a solar surface such that onboard sensors may be utilized to gather information about the solar surface. An onboard communication unit relays information to a central processing network, this processor combines new information with stored historical data to calibrate a solar surface and/or to determine its instantaneous health.

Claims (28)

1. A robot comprising:

a flight system and a flight control system configured to maneuver the robot over ground-based obstacles and position the robot at a calibration station corresponding to a support structure having an adjustable surface;

a sensor configured to identify status information for the adjustable surface when the robot is positioned at the calibration station, the status information for the adjustable surface including an orientation of the adjustable surface; and

a calibration system configured to determine calibration information for the adjustable surface based on status information corresponding to the adjustable surface when the robot is positioned at the calibration station.

2. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the robot further comprises a station sensing system configured to compute a path of travel to the calibration station and engage the flight control system to move the robot along the path of travel.

3. The robot of claim 2 , wherein the station sensing system is further configured to sense when the robot is positioned at the calibration station.

4. The robot of claim 1 , wherein determining calibration information for the adjustable surface comprises determining an alignment value for the adjustable surface, the alignment value describing reorientation of the adjustable surface to an optimal solar vector.

5. The robot of claim 4 , wherein the status information identified for the adjustable surface comprises an orientation of the adjustable surface determined relative to an orientation of the robot.

6. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the calibration system includes a perpendicularity unit to determine a perpendicularity measure of the support structure based on orientation of the robot and orientation of the support structure relative to the orientation of the robot, wherein the status information identified for the adjustable surface comprises the orientation of the support structure relative to the robot.

7. The robot of claim 6 , wherein the perpendicularity measure of the support structure is a difference between a direction of an axis of the support structure and a direction of gravitational force.

8. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the sensor is a first sensor and the status information is first status information and wherein the robot further comprises a second sensor configured to provide second status information that includes an orientation of the robot, wherein a portion of the first status information for the adjustable surface is determined relative to a portion of the second status information for the robot.

9. The robot of claim 8 , wherein the portion of the first status information for the adjustable surface includes an orientation of the adjustable surface determined relative to the orientation of the robot.

10. The robot of claim 8 , wherein the portion of the first status information for the adjustable surface includes an orientation of the support structure of the adjustable surface and the orientation of the support structure is determined relative to the orientation of the robot.

11. The robot of claim 8 , wherein the portion of the second status information for the robot includes a position of the robot.

12. The robot of claim 11 , wherein the portion of the first status information for the adjustable surface includes a position of the support structure of the adjustable surface and the position of the support structure is determined relative to the position of the robot.

13. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the adjustable surface is a solar reflector.

14. The robot of claim 1 , further comprising an orientation sensor configured to determine an orientation of the robot.

15. The robot of claim 1 , wherein the robot comprises a station sensing system configured to compute a path of travel from the calibration station to a second calibration station corresponding to a second adjustable surface and engage the flight control system to move the robot along the path of travel.

16. The robot of claim 15 , wherein the station sensing system engages the flight control system to move the robot along the path of travel in response to determining the position and orientation of the robot and the status information for the adjustable surface.

17. The robot of claim 15 , wherein the station sensing system engages the flight control system to move the robot along the path of travel in response to calibration of the adjustable surface based on the calibration information.

18. The robot of claim 17 , wherein calibration of the adjustable surface comprises an adjustment of the adjustable surface by an alignment value, the alignment value describing reorientation of the adjustable surface to an optimal solar vector.

19. A system comprising:

a robot comprising:

a flight system and a flight control system configured to maneuver the robot through the air and position the robot at a calibration station corresponding to a support structure having an adjustable surface;

a sensor configured to identify status information for the adjustable surface in response to the robot being positioned at the calibration station, the status information for the adjustable surface including an orientation of the adjustable surface; and

a transmitter configured to transmit the status information for the adjustable surface; and

a calibration unit configured to determine calibration information for the adjustable surface based on status information identified for the adjustable surface when the robot is positioned at the calibration station.
