Abstract

Disclosed herein are methods and systems for providing continuous presence video stream in a cascading video conference, i.e., a video conference that is conducted over more than one MCU. A cascading continuous presence composition controller (CCCC) selects which endpoints from among all of the endpoints participating in the conference should be displayed in the layout, regardless of which endpoints are associated with which MCU. The CCCC can be resident on one of the MCUs, resident on a cascading conference server, or can be distributed among all of the MCUs involved in a cascading conference.

Claims (33)

1. A video processor, configured to:

receive a plurality of video streams from a first plurality of endpoints;

receive one or more associated continuous presence video streams from a video conferencing control unit, wherein the one or more associated continuous presence video streams comprise video streams from selected endpoints from a second plurality of endpoints associated with the video conferencing control unit;

create one or more cascading continuous presence video streams comprising the video streams received from the first plurality of endpoints and the one or more associated continuous presence video streams received from the video conferencing control unit; and

send the one or more cascading continuous presence video streams toward an endpoint of the first plurality of endpoints.

2. The video processor of claim 1 , wherein the video processor comprises a controller configured to select one or more endpoints from the first plurality of endpoints to be included in the cascading continuous presence video stream.

3. The video processor of claim 2 , wherein the controller is further configured to select one or more endpoints from the first plurality of endpoints to be included in a second one or more associated continuous presence video streams.

4. The video processor claim 3 , wherein the video processor is further configured to:

compose the second one or more associated continuous presence video streams, comprising video streams from the selected one or more endpoints from the first plurality of endpoints; and

send the second one or more associated continuous presence video stream toward the video conferencing control unit.

5. The video processor of claim 1 , wherein the video processor is embedded within a video conferencing control unit.

6. A video conferencing control unit, comprising:

a network interface that is configured to communicate with a first plurality of endpoints that are associated with the video conferencing control unit and with a second video conferencing control unit that is associated with a second plurality of endpoints; and

a video processor, coupled to the network interface, that is configured to:

receive a plurality of video streams from the first plurality of endpoints;

receive one or more associated continuous presence video streams from the second video conferencing control unit, wherein the one or more associated continuous presence video streams comprise video streams from selected endpoints from the second plurality of endpoints;

create one or more cascading continuous presence video streams comprising video streams received from selected endpoints of the first plurality of endpoints and the one or more associated continuous presence video streams from the second video conferencing control unit; and

send the one or more cascading continuous presence video streams toward an endpoint of the first plurality of endpoints via the network interface.

7. The video conferencing control unit of claim 6 , wherein the selection of one or more endpoints from the first plurality of endpoints and the selection of endpoints from the second plurality of endpoints are performed independently of which video conferencing control unit is associated with which endpoints, based on at least one selection parameter received from each endpoint, the at least one selection parameter comprising audio energy.

8. The video conferencing control unit of claim 6 , further comprising a controller configured to select one or more endpoints from the first plurality of endpoints to be included in the cascading continuous presence video stream.

9. The video conferencing control unit of claim 8 , wherein the controller is further configured to select one or more endpoints from the first plurality of endpoints to be included in a second one or more associated continuous presence video streams.

10. The video conferencing control unit of claim 9 , wherein the video processor is further configured to:

compose the second one or more associated continuous presence video streams, comprising video streams from the selected one or more endpoints from the first plurality of endpoints; and

send the second one or more associated continuous presence video stream toward the second video conferencing control unit.

11. A method of composing one or more cascading continuous presence video streams in a video conference involving a plurality of video conferencing control units, each video conferencing control unit associated with a plurality of endpoints, comprising:

receiving a plurality of video streams from a first plurality of endpoints associated with a first video conferencing control unit;

receiving one or more associated continuous presence video streams from a second video conferencing control unit, wherein the one or more associated continuous presence video streams comprise video streams from selected endpoints from a second plurality of endpoints associated with the second video conferencing control unit;

composing one or more cascading continuous presence video streams comprising video streams received from selected endpoints of the first plurality of endpoints and the one or more associated continuous presence video streams from the second video conferencing unit; and

sending the one or more cascading continuous presence video streams toward an endpoint of the first plurality of endpoints.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein composing one or more cascading continuous presence video streams comprises:

selecting one or more endpoints of the first plurality of endpoints based on at least one selection parameter corresponding to at least one endpoint associated with each of the video conferencing control units received by a cascading continuous presence composition controller.

13. The method of claim 12 , where selecting one or more endpoints to be included in the cascading continuous presence stream comprises:

selecting one or more endpoints independently of which video conferencing control unit is associated with which endpoints, based on at least one selection parameter received from each endpoint, the at least one selection parameter comprising audio energy.
