Abstract

A method for providing local access to managed content is disclosed. The method comprises receiving from a remote host a request to perform an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content and obtaining information required to respond to the request. The method further comprises providing in response to the request a content locator usable to perform the requested operation through direct communication with a local content system associated with the remote host.

Claims (49)

1. A local content system for providing local access to managed content, comprising:

a processor configured to:

receive at the local content system a request from a remote host, the request including an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content and a content locator associated with the content, wherein the content locator is provided to the remote host from a content management system, wherein the content management system determines the content locator based at least in part on querying a content system for information associated with responding to the request, wherein the content system provides to the content management system a query response that includes data usable by the content management system to generate the content locator based on one or more quality of service metrics between the local content system and the remote host;

use at least the content locator to determine at the local content system whether the content associated with the request is available locally at the local content system;

access by the local content system the content associated with the request based at least in part on the determination; and

provide the accessed content from the local content system to the remote host; and

a memory coupled to the processor and configured to store the request.

2. The local content system of claim 1 , wherein the content locator includes one or more of the following: a URL or executable or self-executing code.

3. The local content system of claim 1 , wherein to use at least the content locator to determine whether the content associated with the request is available locally includes to determine whether a local cached copy of the requested content is available locally at the local content system.

4. The local content system of claim 3 , wherein to access the content associated with the request includes to:

determine that in the event the local cached copy of the requested content is available locally at the local content system, determine whether the local cached copy is synchronized with a corresponding master object stored at the content system;

in the event that the local cached copy is not synchronized with the corresponding master object stored at the content system, synchronize the local cached copy with the corresponding master object prior to responding to the request; and

in the event that the local cached copy is synchronized with the corresponding master object at the content system, perform the operation with respect to the local cached copy.

5. The local content system of claim 3 , wherein to access the content associated with the request includes to:

determine that in the event the local cached copy of the requested content is not available locally at the local content system, use the content locator to obtain the content prior to responding to the request.

6. The local content system of claim 5 , wherein the content locator is used to obtain the content from the content system associated with providing information used to create the content locator.

7. The local content system of claim 6 , wherein the information used to create the content locator includes information associated with at least the one or more quality of service metrics between the local content system and the remote host.

The local content system of claim 1 , wherein the one or more quality of service metrics includes one or more of a distance between the remote host and the content system, an available bandwidth for accessing the content system, and a speed of access between the remote host and the content system.

9. The local content system of claim 1 , wherein the determination of the content locator based at least in part on the querying of the content system for information associated with responding to the request comprises:

the content management system sending a query associated with requested content to the content system, and the content management system receiving the query response.

10. The local content system of claim 1 , wherein to use at least the content locator to determine whether the content associated with the request is available locally comprises:

the content management system determining one or more local content systems storing information responsive to the request from the remote host, and determining which of the one or more local content systems storing the information responsive to the request is online.

11. A method for providing local access to managed content, comprising:

receiving, by a processor at a local content system, a request from a remote host, the request including an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content and a content locator associated with the content, wherein the content locator is provided to the remote host from a content management system, wherein the content management system determines the content locator based at least in part on querying a content system for information associated with responding to the request, wherein the content system provides to the content management system a query response that includes data usable by the content management system to generate the content locator based on one or more quality of service metrics between the local content system and the remote host;

using at least the content locator to determine at the local content system whether the content associated with the request is available locally at the local content system;

accessing by the local content system the content associated with the request based at least in part on the determination; and

providing the accessed content from the local content system to the remote host.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the content locator includes one or more of the following: a URL or executable or self-executing code.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein using at least the content locator to determine whether the content associated with the request is available locally includes determining whether a local cached copy of the requested content is available locally at the local content system.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein accessing the content associated with the request includes:

determining that in the event the local cached copy of the requested content is available locally at the local content system, determining whether the local cached copy is synchronized with a corresponding master object stored at the content system;

in the event that the local cached copy is not synchronized with the corresponding master object stored at the content system, synchronizing the local cached copy with the corresponding master object prior to responding to the request; and

in the event that the local cached copy is synchronized with the corresponding master object at the content system, performing the operation with respect to the local cached copy.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein accessing the content associated with the request includes:

determining that in the event the local cached copy of the requested content is not available locally at the local content system, using the content locator to obtain the content prior to responding to the request.

16. The method of claim 15 , wherein the content locator is used to obtain the content from the content system associated with providing information used to create the content locator.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the information used to create the content locator includes information associated with at least the one or more quality of service metrics between the local content system and the remote host.

18. A computer program product for providing local access to managed content, the computer program product being embodied in a non-transitory computer readable storage medium and comprising computer instructions for:

receiving at a local content system a request from a remote host, the request including an operation with respect to content associated with a set of managed content and a content locator associated with the content, wherein the content locator is provided to the remote host from a content management system, wherein the content management system determines the content locator based at least in part on querying a content system for information associated with responding to the request, wherein the content system provides to the content management system a query response that includes data usable by the content management system to generate the content locator based on one or more quality of service metrics between the local content system and the remote host;

using at least the content locator to determine at the local content system whether the content associated with the request is available locally at the local content system;

accessing the content associated with the request based at least in part on the determination; and

providing the accessed content from the local content system to the remote host.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 , wherein using at least the content locator to determine whether the content associated with the request is available locally includes determining whether a local cached copy of the requested content is available locally at the local content system.

20. The computer program product of claim 19 , wherein accessing the content associated with the request includes:

determining that in the event the local cached copy of the requested content is available locally at the local content system, determining whether the local cached copy is synchronized with a corresponding master object stored at the content system;

in the event that the local cached copy is not synchronized with the corresponding master object stored at the content system, synchronizing the local cached copy with the corresponding master object prior to responding to the request; and

in the event that the local cached copy is synchronized with the corresponding master object at the content system, performing the operation with respect to the local cached copy.

21. The computer program product of claim 19 , wherein accessing the content associated with the request includes:

determining that in the event the local cached copy of the requested content is not available locally at the local content system, using the content locator to obtain the content prior to responding to the request.
