Abstract

A reader device includes a housing for receiving a smart card, a processor in electronic communication with an integrated circuit chip of the smart card when the smart card is received in the housing, a wireless communications device in electronic communication with the processor for enabling the reader device to transmit first encrypted information wirelessly and to receive second encrypted information wirelessly, and a memory in electronic communication with the processor that includes one or more routines executable by the processor. The one or more routines include a cryptographic module adapted to encrypt first information to create the first encrypted information and decrypt the second encrypted information to obtain second information. In addition, a communication system that includes the reader device and a computing device, wherein the reader device and computing device are able to wirelessly exchange information in a secure manner.

Claims (16)

1. A portable device for receiving a smart card having an integrated circuit chip and a front face having identifying information provided thereon, the portable device comprising:

a housing having a channel arranged to receive the smart card,

the channel being defined by a flange portion and a lower portion,

the channel being arranged in a manner wherein, when the smart card is received in the channel, the lower portion covers the integrated circuit chip and a portion of the identifying information is visible,

the housing further comprising an attachment mechanism for enabling the portable device to be worn;

a processor in electronic communication with the integrated circuit chip when the smart card is received in the channel, the processor, in use, encrypting a session key, thereby producing encrypted session key; and

a transceiver in electronic communication with the processor, the transceiver, in use, wirelessly transmitting the encrypted session key to a computing device.

2. The portable device of claim 1 wherein the lower portion includes a contact adapted to make electrical contact with the smart card.

3. The portable device of claim 1 further comprising a memory in electronic communication with the processor, the memory storing a routine for execution by the processor to carry out the encrypting information.

4. The portable device of claim 1 wherein the transceiver comprises a Bluetooth radio.

5. The portable device of claim 1 wherein the transceiver comprises a Radio Frequency transceiver.

6. The portable device of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a clip.

7. The portable device of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism comprises a portion for receiving a lanyard.

8. The portable device of claim 1 wherein the attachment mechanism comprises first and second arm portions for receiving and holding a strap.

9. The portable device of claim 1 , the channel further being defined by a second flange.

10. The portable device of claim 1 , the channel adapted to hold the smart card on three sides.
