Abstract

A computer-implemented method of identifying weather events in geographic regions of interest includes monitoring queries to a weather information system. The queries contain at least one field indicative of a geographic region of interest. A signal indicative of the presence of a weather event in the geographic region of interest is generated when the number of queries pertaining to the geographic region of interest is above the statistically determined value.

Claims (32)

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

monitoring a number of inputs received into a weather information system, wherein each input is received from an entity and is associated with a geographic region;

determining a high likelihood of a presence of a weather event in proximity to the geographic region when the number of inputs for the geographic region exceed a pre-established input threshold for the geographic region;

requesting weather data from one or more weather devices in the geographic area in response to the determined high likelihood; and

generating a signal indicative of an actual or expected presence of the weather event in proximity to the geographic region based on analysis of the weather data.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the inputs comprise internet queries.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the inputs comprise broadcast tuning data.

4. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the entity includes at least one of an individual, a company, and a network.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , further comprising:

modifying content on the weather information system to include information related to the weather event.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein the step of modifying occurs when the weather event is in proximity to the geographic region.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 5 , wherein the content included on the weather information system is generated automatically.

8. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is determined at least in part by analyzing records of the number of inputs for the geographic region related to an average number of input by entities associated with the geographic region over a period of time.

9. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is determined at least in part by analyzing records of the number of inputs for the region related to an average number of input by entities associated with the geographic region.

10. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is determined at least in part by analyzing records of the number of inputs for the geographic region related to a standard deviation of the number of inputs by entities associated with the geographic region.

11. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the weather event is at least one of a thunderstorm, a windstorm, a tornado, and an ice storm.

12. A system comprising:

at least one server containing weather information including weather event information for a plurality of geographic regions;

a storage device coupled to the at least one server configured to store a pre-established threshold for a geographic region; and

a processor coupled to the at least one server configured to:

monitor a number of inputs received into the system, wherein each input is received from an entity and is associated with the geographic region;

determine a high likelihood of presence of a weather event in proximity to the geographic region when the monitored number of inputs for the geographic region exceed the threshold for the geographic region;

request weather data from one or more weather devices in the geographic area in response to the determined high likelihood; and

generate a signal indicative of an actual or expected presence of the weather event in proximity to the geographic region based on an analysis of the weather data.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein the inputs comprise internet queries.

14. The system of claim 12 , wherein the inputs comprise broadcast tuning data.

15. The system of claim 12 , wherein entity includes at least one of an individual, a company, and a network.

16. The system of claim 12 , wherein the weather event information includes information for at least one of a thunderstorm, a windstorm, a tornado, and an ice storm.

17. The system of claim 12 , wherein the processor is further configured to modify content of the weather information system to include information related to the presence of the weather event in the proximity of the geographic region.

18. The system of claim 12 , wherein the threshold is determined at least in part by analyzing records of the number of inputs related to an average number of inputs by entities associated with the geographic region over a period of time.

19. The system of claim 12 , wherein the threshold is determined at least in part by analyzing records of the number of inputs related to an average number of inputs by entities associated with the geographic region.

20. The system of claim 12 , wherein the threshold is determined at least in part by analyzing records of the number of inputs related to a standard deviation of the number of inputs by entities associated with the geographic region.
