Abstract

Databases may be backed up on a mass storage device. Storing the database backup on mass storage, rather than tape drive, allows operations, such as from a database manager, with large input/output to improve performance. A method of backing up a database to a mass storage device may include receiving, at a database manager, a call from a backup utility to copy data from a source file to a destination file, performing, at the database manager, a plurality of input/output requests, in response to the call, to copy data from the source file to the destination file, and returning, to the backup utility, status information regarding completion of the call Placing the database backup on mass storage can further enable use of that backup as a shadow or alternate database.

Claims (32)

1 . A method, comprising:

receiving, at a database manager, a call from a backup utility to copy data from a source file to a destination file:

performing, at the database manager, a plurality of input/output requests, in response to the call, to copy data from the source file to the destination file; and

returning, to the backup utility, status information regarding completion of the call.

2 . The method of claim 1 , in which the source file is a production database and the destination file is a shadow database.

3 . The method of claim 2 , in which the production database and the copied or shadow database are stored on a mass storage device.

4 . The method of claim 3 , in which the plurality of input/output requests comprises a request for a block of data from the mass storage drive.

5 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising tracking, by the backup utility, copy operations performed by the database manager to the shadow database.

6 . The method of claim 5 , further comprising restoring, by the backup utility, data to the production database from the shadow database.

7 . A computer program product, comprising:

a non-transitory computer readable medium comprising

code to receive, at a database manager, a call from a backup utility to copy data from a source file to a destination file;

code to perform, at the database manager, a plurality of input/output requests, in response to the call, to copy data from the source file to the destination file; and

code to return, to the backup utility, status information regarding completion of the call.

8 . The computer program of claim 7 , in which the source file is a production database and the destination file is a shadow database.

9 . The computer program of claim 8 , in which the production database and the copied or shadow database are hosted on a mass storage device.

10 . The computer program of claim 9 , in which the plurality of input/output requests comprises a request for a block of data from the mass storage drive.

11 . The computer program of claim 8 , in which the medium further comprises code to track, by the backup utility, copy operations performed by the database manager to the shadow database.

12 . The computer program of claim 11 , in which the medium further comprises code to restoring, by the backup utility, data to the production database from the shadow database.

13 . An apparatus, comprising:

a memory; and

a processor coupled to the memory, in which the processor is configured:

to receive, at a database manager, a call from a backup utility to copy data from a source file to a destination file;

to perform, at the database manager, a plurality of input/output requests, in response to the call, to copy data from the source file to the destination file; and

to return, to the backup utility, status information regarding completion of the call.

14 . The apparatus of claim 13 , in which the source file is a production database and the destination file is a shadow database.

15 . The apparatus of claim 14 , further comprising

a mass storage device,

in which the production database and the shadow database is hosted on the mass storage device.

16 . The apparatus of claim 15 , in which the plurality of input/output requests comprises a request for a block of data from the mass storage drive.

17 . The apparatus of claim 14 , in which the processor is further configured to track, by the backup utility, copy operations performed by the database manager to the shadow database.

18 . The apparatus of claim 14 , in which the processor is further configured to restoring, by the backup utility, data to the production database from the shadow database.
