Abstract

A superhydrophobic surface includes a substrate treated with a non-fluorinated composition, the composition including a hydrophobic component free of fluorine; a filler particle; and water, wherein the composition is at a pH greater than 7, and wherein the hydrophobic component is in an aqueous dispersion. The superhydrophobic surface alternatively includes a substrate treated with a non-fluorinated composition, the composition including a hydrophobic polymer free of fluorine; an exfoliated graphite filler particle including acid functional groups; water; and a stabilizing compound, wherein the composition is at a pH greater than 7, and wherein the hydrophobic polymer is in an aqueous dispersion.

Claims (31)

1. A superhydrophobic surface comprising a substrate treated with a non-fluorinated composition comprising:

a water-dispersible hydrophobic component free of fluorine;

a water-dispersible filler particle; and

water, wherein the composition is at a pH greater than 7, wherein the hydrophobic component is in an aqueous dispersion, and wherein the aqueous dispersion is free of organic solvents.

2. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic component is selected from the group consisting of polymers and nanoparticles.

3. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic component includes a polyolefin.

4. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the hydrophobic component includes a co-polymer of olefin and acrylic acid.

5. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the filler particle has a high aspect ratio.

6. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the filler particle includes acrylic acid, carboxylic acid, or a combination thereof as a functional group.

7. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the filler particle includes an exfoliated graphite.

8. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 7 , wherein the exfoliated graphite is selected from graphene, a few layer graphene, and an exfoliated graphite nanoplatelet.

9. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the composition is free of volatile organic compounds.

10. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , further comprising a stabilizing compound.

11. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 10 , wherein the stabilizing compound is selected from KOH and NH 3 (aq).

12. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a nonwoven web.

13. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the substrate is a tissue product.

14. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 1 , wherein the filler particle includes an acid functional group.

15. A superhydrophobic surface comprising a substrate treated with a non-fluorinated composition comprising:

a water-dispersible hydrophobic polymer free of fluorine;

a water-dispersible exfoliated graphite filler particle including acid functional groups;

water; and

a stabilizing compound, wherein the composition is at a pH greater than 7, wherein the hydrophobic polymer is in an aqueous dispersion, and wherein the aqueous dispersion is free of organic solvents.

16. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 15 , wherein the hydrophobic polymer includes a polyolefin.

17. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 15 , wherein the filler particle includes acrylic acid, carboxylic acid, or a combination thereof as a functional group.

18. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 15 , wherein the exfoliated graphite is selected from graphene, a few layer graphene, and an exfoliated graphite nanoplatelet.

19. The superhydrophobic surface of claim 15 , wherein the stabilizing compound is selected from KOH and NH 3 (aq).

20. A superhydrophobic surface comprising a substrate treated with a non-fluorinated composition comprising:

a water-dispersible hydrophobic component free of fluorine;

a stabilizing compound, wherein the stabilizing compound is selected from KOH and NH 3 (aq);
