2. The planetary gear assembly of claim 1 wherein the first planetary gear component is a ring gear and the second planetary gear component is a sun gear, the planetary gear assembly further comprising a plurality of planet gears positioned between the ring gear and the sun gear when the ring gear and sun gear are respectively in the first position and when the ring gear and sun gear are respectively in the second position.

3. The planetary gear assembly of claim 2 further comprising a carrier coupled to the planet gears.

4. The planetary gear assembly of claim 3 , wherein an output portion of the carrier is at least partially positioned within a cavity defined by the sun gear.

5. The planetary gear assembly of claim 3 wherein the rotor rotates the carrier with a first gear ratio when the ring gear is in the first position, and the rotor rotates the carrier with a second gear ratio when the ring gear is in the second position.

6. The planetary gear assembly of claim 2 wherein the electric motor includes a housing defining an interior space and the planets gears are positioned within the interior space.

7. The planetary gear assembly of claim 1 wherein the electric motor is a traction motor, and the traction motor is positioned within a vehicle.

8. An electric motor assembly comprising:

a housing;

a stator positioned within the housing;

a rotor positioned within the housing and configured to rotate relative to the stator; and

a planetary gear assembly coupled to the rotor, the planetary gear assembly comprising a plurality of planetary gear components, at least one of the plurality of planetary gear components a reversible component configured to be selectively arranged in a first position and a second position within the planetary gear assembly, the reversible component being reversed relative to the first position when in the second position, wherein the planetary gear assembly is configured to deliver an output at a first gear ratio relative to the rotor when the reversible component is in the first position and deliver the output at a second gear ratio relative to the rotor when the reversible component is in the second position.

9. The electric motor assembly of claim 8 wherein in the plurality of planetary gear components include a ring gear, a sun gear, a plurality of planet gears, and a carrier.

10. The electric motor assembly of claim 9 wherein the reversible component is the ring gear, the ring gear connected to the rotor in the first position and connected to the housing in the second position.

11. The electric motor assembly of claim 9 further comprising a carrier connected to the plurality of planet gears, wherein the carrier is the output member of the planetary gear assembly when the reversible component is in the first position and the second position.

12. The electric motor assembly of claim 9 wherein the reversible component is the sun gear, the sun gear connected to the housing in the first position and connected to the rotor in the second position.

13. The electric motor assembly of claim 9 wherein both the ring gear and the sun gear are reversible components.

14. The electric motor assembly of claim 9 wherein the carrier is configured to rotate in the planetary gear assembly when the rotor rotates and the reversible component is in the first position and the second position.

15. The electric motor assembly of claim 9 wherein the carrier is configured to remain stationary in the planetary gear assembly when the rotor rotates and the reversible component is in the first position and the second position.

16. A method for assembling an electric machine, the method comprising:

providing a planetary gear assembly including a planetary gear component configured for connection to an electric motor in at least two different positions including a first position and a second position, the second position being reversed relative to the first position;

selecting one of a first gear ratio and a second gear ratio for the output of the planetary gear assembly relative to the rotor, the first gear ratio different than the second gear ratio;

connecting the planetary gear assembly to a rotor of the electric machine with the planetary gear component in the first position if the first gear ratio is selected; and

connecting the planetary gear assembly to the rotor of the electric machine with the planetary gear component in the second position if the second gear ratio is selected.

17. The method of claim 16 wherein the planetary gear component is concentrically oriented along an axis of rotation of the rotor when in the first position and the second position.
