Abstract

A diagnostic engine for remotely determining global line characteristics of a xDSL telecommunication line from an access node location. The diagnostic engine comprises first, second, and preferably third, measurement means adapted to measure respectively first, second and third line characteristics according to three distinct measurement techniques such as MELT, SELT and DELT. The diagnostic engine further comprises combining means able to combine the measured line characteristics in order to derive thereof global line characteristics or information relative to the physical state of the line as well as possible consequences on DSL service. By combining the three measurements in the combining means, the resulting global line characteristics of the line are improved with respect to performing separately interpretations of the three measurements.

Claims (38)

1 . A diagnostic engine for remotely determining global line characteristics of a telecommunication line at a termination of said line,

wherein said diagnostic engine comprises:

first measurement means adapted to measure first predetermined line characteristics according to a first measurement technique,

second measurement means adapted to measure second predetermined line characteristics according to a second measurement technique, and

combining means adapted to combine the measured first and second predetermined line characteristics in order to derive thereof global line characteristics of a telecommunication line.

2 . The diagnostic engine according to claim 1 ,

wherein said first measurement technique is Metallic Line Testing,

and wherein said second measurement technique is Single-ended-line-test.

3 . The diagnostic engine according to claim 1 ,

wherein said first measurement technique is Metallic Line Testing,

and wherein said second measurement technique is Dual-ended-line-test.

4 . The diagnostic engine according to claim 1 ,

wherein said first measurement technique is Single-ended-line-test,

and wherein said second measurement technique is Dual-ended-line-test.

5 . The diagnostic engine according to claim 1 ,

wherein said diagnostic engine further comprises third measurement means adapted to measure third predetermined line characteristics according to a third measurement technique,

and wherein said combining means are adapted to combine the measured first, second and third predetermined line characteristics in order to derive thereof global line characteristics of said line.

6 . The diagnostic engine according to claim 1 , wherein said termination of the telecommunication line is located at a telecommunication access node location.

7 . The diagnostic engine according to claim 1 , wherein said telecommunication line is a DSL telecommunication line.

8 . A method for remotely determining global line characteristics of a telecommunication line at a termination of said line,

wherein said method comprises the steps of:

measuring first predetermined line characteristics according to a first measurement technique,

measuring second predetermined line characteristics according to a second measurement technique, and

combining the measured first and second predetermined line characteristics in order to derive thereof global line characteristics of said line.

9 . The method according to claim 8 ,

wherein said first measurement technique is Metallic Line Testing,

and wherein said second measurement technique is Single-ended-line-test.

10 . The method according to claim 8 ,

wherein said first measurement technique is Metallic Line Testing,

and wherein said second measurement technique is Dual-ended-line-test.

11 . The method according to claim 8 ,

wherein said first measurement technique is Single-ended-line-test,

and wherein said second measurement technique is Dual-ended-line-test.

12 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein said method further comprises the steps of:

measuring third predetermined line characteristics according to a third measurement technique, and

combining the measured first, second and third predetermined line charaderistics in order to derive thereof global line characteristics of said line.

13 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein said termination of the telecommunication line is located at a telecommunication access node location.

14 . The method according to claim 8 , wherein said telecommunication line is a DSL telecommunication line.
