Abstract

Wastewater treatment systems, methods and apparatus for polishing a wastewater stream comprising a plurality of contaminants are provided. One system includes a vessel containing a plurality of natural media filtration agents selected to remove selected ones of the plurality of contaminants from the wastewater stream. In one embodiment, the vessel includes a bed of bauxite residue and at least one other natural media filtration agent. In another embodiment, the vessel includes a bed of compost and at least one other natural media filtration agent. The vessel includes a wastewater inlet that is in fluid communication with one or more of the natural media filtration agents. The vessel includes a wastewater outlet that is in fluid communication with one or more of the natural media filtration agents.

Claims (9)

1. A method, comprising:

directing a wastewater stream through a wastewater treatment bed, the bed consisting essentially of commingled bauxite residue and iron filings, wherein the wastewater stream has a contaminant profile including pathogens; and

polishing the wastewater, via the bauxite residue and iron filings, thereby removing pathogens from the wastewater.

2. The method of claim 1 , further wherein the contaminant profile comprises at least of: arsenic, chromium, cyanides, fluorides, herbicides, pesticides, PAHs, nitrogen, phosphorous, and selenium,

wherein, via the polishing step, the at least one other contaminant is removed from the wastewater stream.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the empty bed contact time is not greater than 90 minutes.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the empty bed contact time is not less than 50 minutes.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the directing step comprises directing wastewater through the wastewater treatment system at a surface loading rate of at least 8.1 lpm/m2.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the directing step comprises directing wastewater through the wastewater treatment system at a hydraulic loading rate of not greater than surface loading rate of at least 20.3 lpm/m2.
