Abstract

A compressed-air energy storage system according to embodiments of the present invention comprises a reversible mechanism to compress and expand air, one or more compressed air storage tanks, a control system, one or more heat exchangers, and, in certain embodiments of the invention, a motor-generator. The reversible air compressor-expander uses mechanical power to compress air (when it is acting as a compressor) and converts the energy stored in compressed air to mechanical power (when it is acting as an expander). In certain embodiments, the compressor-expander comprises one or more stages, each stage consisting of pressure vessel (the “pressure cell”) partially filled with water or other liquid. In some embodiments, the pressure vessel communicates with one or more cylinder devices to exchange air and liquid with the cylinder chamber(s) thereof. Suitable valving allows air to enter and leave the pressure cell and cylinder device, if present, under electronic control.

Claims (37)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a chamber in fluid communication with a compressed gas storage unit;

an element configured to effect gas-liquid heat exchange with gas expanding within the chamber in an absence of combustion;

a member moveable within the chamber to transmit a power of expanding gas, out of the chamber via a mechanical linkage; and

power conditioning electronics configured to receive an electrical output of a generator in communication with the mechanical linkage, and configured to produce an output to an interface of a power supply network.

2. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the power conditioning electronics comprises a variable frequency drive (VFD).

3. An apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the VFD comprises a regenerative component.

4. An apparatus as in claim 2 wherein the VFD comprises an active front end filter.

5. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the power conditioning electronics comprises a capacitor bank.

6. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the power conditioning electronics comprises a reactive power compensator.

7. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a switch configured to selectively allow the output of the electrical generator to bypass the power conditioning electronics and flow directly to the interface of the power supply network.

8. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the power conditioning electronics are configured to balance a load.

9. An apparatus as in claim 8 wherein the power conditioning electronics are configured to power a function comprising water heating, compression, or liquid pumping.

10. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a switch configured to selectively allow the output of the electrical generator to bypass the power conditioning electronics and flow directly to the interface of the power supply network.

11. An apparatus as in claim 10 wherein the switch is also in electronic communication with another system.

12. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the interface of the power supply network comprises a transformer, a meter, or a busbar.

13. An apparatus as in claim 1 further comprising a valve allowing selective fluid communication between the compressed gas storage unit and the chamber.

14. An apparatus as in claim 13 wherein:

the member comprises a piston configured to reciprocate within the chamber; and

the mechanical linkage comprises a piston rod and a rotating shaft.

15. An apparatus as in claim 13 further comprising a control system configured to:

receive a signal; and

based upon the received signal, electronically control the valve to flow compressed gas into the cylinder such that an electrical generator in communication with the mechanical linkage supplies electrical power to a power supply network to cover a ramp up period of a generation asset.

16. An apparatus as in claim 13 wherein the valve comprises a cam operated poppet valve.

17. An apparatus as in claim 16 wherein a timing of the cam operated poppet valve is controlled by varying an effective profile of a cam.

18. An apparatus as in claim 16 wherein the cam operated poppet valve comprises a spring.

19. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the member is configured to rotate within the chamber.

20. An apparatus as in claim 19 wherein:

the member comprises a vane; and

the mechanical linkage comprises a rotating shaft.

21. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the element is configured to introduce liquid droplets for heat exchange.

22. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the element is configured to introduce gas bubbles for heat exchange.

23. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the element is configured to effect gas-liquid heat exchange utilizing a liquid comprising a foaming agent.

24. An apparatus as in claim 23 wherein the energy source comprises a motor, a motor-generator, a wind turbine, or a combustion turbine.

25. An apparatus as in claim 1 wherein the mechanical linkage is in selective communication with an energy source to cause the member to compress gas within the chamber.

26. An apparatus as in claim 25 wherein the element is configured to effect gas-liquid heat exchange with gas being compressed within the chamber.

27. An apparatus as in claim 26 wherein the element is configured to effect gas-liquid heat exchange with gas being compressed within the chamber, utilizing a liquid comprising a foaming agent.
