Abstract

A portable electronic device having an input device for receiving a gesture based input from a user is used to control a navigation operation of an appliance. The portable electronic device receives via the input device the gesture based input and uses one or more parameters stored in a memory of the portable electronic device and one or more characteristics associated with the gesture based input to cause the portable electronic device to transmit a navigation step command to thereby control the navigation operation of the appliance.

Claims (36)

1. A method for using a gesture based input to control a navigation operation of an appliance, comprising:

receiving raw data indicative of at least one characteristic associated with a gesture based input provided to an input device;

using one or more parameters selected from a library of parameters to modify the received raw data indicative of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input; and

using the modified, received raw data indicative of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input to generate a navigation step command for transmission to the appliance;

wherein the transmitted navigation step command comprises data for use in controlling the navigation operation of the appliance, the data comprises a sequence of direction commands, and a number of direction commands within the sequence is reflective of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input and the one or more parameters selected from the library of parameters.

2. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one or more parameters are selected from the library of parameters in response to input received via a biometric input sensor.

3. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one or more parameters are selected from the library of parameters by the appliance.

4. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the one or more parameters from the library of parameters are selected by the appliance as a function of an appliance activity.

5. The method as recited in claim 1 , wherein the input device comprises a touch sensitive surface.

6. The method as recited in claim 5 , wherein the touch sensitive surface comprises a two-axis, capacitive touch sensor.

7. The method as recited in claim 1 , comprising providing user feedback representative of the gesture based input.

8. The method as recited in claim 7 , wherein the user feedback comprises a series of audible sounds representative of the gesture based input.

9. A method for using a gesture based input to control a navigation operation of an appliance, comprising:

receiving raw data indicative of at least one characteristic associated with a gesture based input provided to an input device;

using one or more parameters selected from a library of parameters to modify the received raw data indicative of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input; and

using the modified, received raw data indicative of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input to generate a navigation step command for transmission to the appliance;

wherein the transmitted navigation step command comprises data for use in controlling the navigation operation of the appliance, the data comprises a sequence of direction commands, and a timing between a transmission of consecutive ones of the direction commands within the sequence is reflective of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input and the one or more parameters selected from the library of parameters.

10. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the one or more parameters are selected from the library of parameters in response to input received via a biometric input sensor.

11. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the one or more parameters are selected from the library of parameters by the appliance.

12. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the one or more parameters from the library of parameters are selected by the appliance as a function of an appliance activity.

13. The method as recited in claim 9 , wherein the input device comprises a touch sensitive surface.

14. The method as recited in claim 13 , wherein the touch sensitive surface comprises a two-axis, capacitive touch sensor.

15. The method as recited in claim 9 , comprising providing user feedback representative of the gesture based input.

16. The method as recited in claim 15 , wherein the user feedback comprises a series of audible sounds representative of the gesture based input.

17. A method for using a gesture based input to control a navigation operation of an appliance, comprising:

receiving raw data indicative of at least one characteristic associated with a gesture based input provided to an input device;

using one or more parameters selected from a library of parameters to modify the received raw data indicative of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input; and

using the modified, received raw data indicative of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input to generate a navigation step command for transmission to the appliance;

wherein the transmitted navigation step command comprises data for use in controlling the navigation operation of the appliance, the data comprises a sequence of direction delta values, and each of the direction delta values within the sequence has a value that is reflective of the at least one characteristic associated with the gesture based input and the one or more parameters selected from the library of parameters.

18. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the one or more parameters are selected from the library of parameters in response to input received via a biometric input sensor.

19. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the one or more parameters are selected from the library of parameters by the appliance.

20. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the one or more parameters from the library of parameters are selected by the appliance as a function of an appliance activity.

21. The method as recited in claim 17 , wherein the input device comprises a touch sensitive surface.

22. The method as recited in claim 21 , wherein the touch sensitive surface comprises a two-axis, capacitive touch sensor.

23. The method as recited in claim 17 , comprising providing user feedback representative of the gesture based input.

24. The method as recited in claim 23 , wherein the user feedback comprises a series of audible sounds representative of the gesture based input.
