Abstract

Apparatus and methods for premises gateway functions that integrate or unify functions typically distributed across multiple devices within a content-based network. In one embodiment, the out-of-band (OOB) signaling functionality normally provided in each of a set-top-box (STB) and digital video recorder (DVR) are unified into a common OOB (e.g., DOCSIS) capable premises gateway device, thereby obviating OOB tuners and related components from each device. In another variant, the premises gateway is adapted for all-IP operation, such as for use with IP-based computers and IP set-top boxes, etc. Fully unified variants are also disclosed, wherein the DVR and/or STB functions are physically integrated within the premises gateway.

4. The gateway device of claim 3 , wherein said IP signals comprise video content signals encapsulated using an Internet Protocol (IP) and packetized using a Motion Picture Experts Group (MPEG)-based packetization protocol.

5. The gateway device of claim 2 , wherein tuner resources of individual ones of said plurality of user devices are consolidated by said gateway device for utilization thereof by other ones of said plurality of user devices.

6. The gateway device of claim 2 , wherein said content source comprises one of said plurality of user devices other than that which requested said individual ones of said plurality of content.

7. The gateway device of claim 2 , wherein said plurality of user devices comprises at least two devices generating two respective signals, and said transceiver is further configured to consolidate said two respective signals and transmit said consolidated signal to said network entity.

8. The gateway device of claim 1 , wherein said transceiver comprises a DOCSIS compliant cable modem with media access controller (MAC).

9. The gateway device of claim 1 , further comprising a transcoder apparatus configured to encode a signal encoded according to a first format into a second format different from said first.

10. The gateway device of claim 1 , wherein said creation of said trusted domain comprises validation and identification of each of said authorized ones of said one or more user devices.

11. The gateway device of claim 10 , wherein said validation and identification comprises message exchanges between said gateway device and said one or more user devices.

12. The gateway device of claim 11 , wherein said validation comprises validation of capabilities useful to effect said message exchange.

13. A premises gateway device for use in a content distribution network, comprising:

a first apparatus configured to:

receive first Internet Protocol (IP)-encapsulated video content signals and second non-IP encapsulated video content signals from said network;

create a trusted domain of authorized ones of a plurality of consumer devices disposed within a premises network created by said premises gateway device for delivery of said first or second video content signals thereto, said trusted domain comprising at least said premises gateway device and said plurality of consumer devices; and

transmit said first and said second video content signals to at least one of said authorized ones of said plurality of consumer devices in said trusted domain; and

a second apparatus configured to:

receive via at least one interface thereof third data signals from said at least one of said authorized ones of said plurality of consumer devices; and

transmit said third data signals to one or more entities of said network, thereby enabling said premises gateway device to act as a communications proxy for said authorized ones of said plurality of consumer devices.

14. The gateway device of claim 13 , wherein at least one entity at a headend of said content distribution network is configured to utilize one or more switching algorithms to determine when to provide individual ones of a plurality of available video content to said premises gateway device as said first IP-encapsulated video content signals, or as said second non-IP encapsulated video content signals.

15. The gateway device of claim 14 , wherein said first IP-encapsulated content is further packetized using a transmission control protocol (TCP).

16. The gateway device of claim 13 , wherein said second non-IP encapsulated video content signals are received from said network via one or more of a plurality of Data Over Cable Services Interface Specification (DOCSIS) quadrature amplitude modulated (QAM)-modulated radio frequency (RF) channels.

17. The gateway device of claim 13 , wherein said at least one consumer premises device comprises at least two devices generating respective fourth data signals, and said third data signals comprising a consolidation of said respective fourth data signals.

18. The gateway device of claim 13 , wherein said receipt of said first IP-encapsulated video content signals occurs via said gateway device joining a multicast group established for delivery thereof from said network.

19. The gateway device of claim 13 , wherein said first IP-encapsulated video content signals and said second non-IP encapsulated video content signals comprise in-band downstream signals received over a hybrid fiber network, and said third data signals comprise out-of-band (OOB) upstream signals.
