Abstract

In an aspect, a positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery including: a compound that reversibly intercalates and deintercalates lithium; and a coating layer coating the compound and including a metal nitrate is disclosed. Since the positive active material is structurally stable during the charge and discharge, the obtained battery may have excellent battery capacity and cycle-life characteristics and also have high power.

Claims (15)

1. A rechargeable lithium battery comprising:

a positive electrode comprising a positive active material;

a negative electrode comprising a negative active material; and

an electrolyte comprising an organic solvent and a lithium salt,

wherein the positive active material comprises a compound represented by Li a Co 1−b G b O 2 , or Li a Mn 1−b G b O 2 , (0.90≦a ≦1.8, 0<b <0.1, G is selected from Al, Fe, Mg, La, Ce, Sr, V, and combinations thereof);

a coating layer located on the surface of the compound and comprising a metal nitrate, wherein the coating layer has a thickness of about 10 nm to about 100 nm;

wherein the coating layer is included in about 0.1 wt% to about 6 wt% based on 100 wt% of the entire positive active material; and

wherein the metal nitrate is a Ni nitrate, a Co nitrate, a Mn nitrate, a Mg nitrate, or a combination thereof.

2. The rechargeable lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound is represented by Li a Co 1−b Mg b O 2 .

3. The rechargeable lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein the metal nitrate is NiNO 3 , CoNO 3 , MnNO 3 , or a combination thereof.

4. The rechargeable lithium battery of claim 3 , wherein the metal nitrate is NiNO 3 .

5. The rechargeable lithium battery of claim 3 , wherein the metal nitrate is CoNO 3 .

6. The rechargeable lithium battery of claim 3 , wherein the metal nitrate is MnNO 3 .

7. The positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein the compound has an average particle diameter of about 5 μm to about 15 μm.

8. The positive active material for a rechargeable lithium battery of claim 1 , wherein the coating layer has a thickness of about 100 nm.
