Abstract

A mood state may be modeled using mood information for a content selection (e.g., a digitally-encoded song) and/or by using mood information determined by how a user is interacting with a media player. For example, a playlist engine on a host may determine that a particular song is associated with an uplifting mood, thus determining that a user who has selected that particular song currently is in an uplifting mood, and correspondingly may select additional songs and advertisements consistent with, or responsive to, the uplifting mood. Mood information also may be used to present a mood state of users (e.g., co-users) in a network for display in a graphical user interface (GUI). For example, a user's screen name appearing in an America Online (AOL) Instant Messenger's Buddy List may indicate a determined user's mood, such as “happy”, “sad”, “silly”, or “angry.”

Claims (35)

1. A method for rendering information on a display, the method comprising:

determining, with at least one processor, a current mood of a user;

determining, with the at least one processor, a plurality of moods for a plurality of co-users;

rendering a plurality of co-user elements corresponding to the plurality of co-users, the co-user elements including a mood element enabling the user to perceive the plurality of moods of the plurality of co-users; and

arranging the plurality of co-user elements based at least in part on a sort parameter, the sort parameter being entered by the user via a sort selection user interface, the sort selection user interface including a selection control having a plurality of selection items that include the sort parameter, the sort parameter including a compatibility of the current mood of the user with the plurality of moods for the plurality of co-users.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the sort parameter includes the difference between the plurality of moods for the plurality of co-users and a reference mood value.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the plurality of co-user elements are arranged from greatest difference to least difference from the reference mood value.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the plurality of co-user elements are arranged from least difference to greatest difference from the reference mood value.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the mood element includes text that changes font based on the mood of the co-user corresponding to the mood element.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the mood element includes an icon.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein determining the plurality of moods for the plurality of co-users includes calculating a plurality of mood values using metadata associated with content currently accessed by the plurality of co-users.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium encoded with a set of instructions that when executed by at least one processor, cause the at least one processor to perform a method comprising:

determining a current mood of a user; determining a plurality of moods for a plurality of co-users; rendering a plurality of co-user elements corresponding to the plurality of co-users, the co-user elements including a mood element enabling the user to perceive the plurality of moods of the plurality of co-users; and

arranging the plurality of co-user elements based at least in part on a sort parameter, the sort parameter being entered by the user via a sort selection user interface, the sort selection user interface including a selection control having a plurality of selection items that include the sort parameter, the sort parameter including a compatibility of the current mood of the user with the plurality of moods for the plurality of co-users.

9. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 wherein the sort parameter includes the difference between the plurality of moods for the plurality of co-users and a reference mood value.

10. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 wherein the plurality of co-user elements are arranged from greatest difference to least difference from the reference mood value.

11. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 9 wherein the plurality of co-user elements are arranged from least difference to greatest difference from the reference mood value.

12. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 wherein the mood element includes text that changes font based on the mood of the co-user corresponding to the mood element.

13. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 wherein the mood element includes an icon.

14. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 wherein the set of instructions further cause the at least one processor to perform the following step:

calculating a plurality of mood values using metadata associated with content currently accessed by the plurality of co-users.

15. An electronic apparatus, comprising:

at least one processor; and

a memory device that stores a set of instructions,

wherein the at least one processor executes the set of instructions to:

determine a current mood of a user,

determine a plurality of moods for a plurality of co-users,

render, on a display, a plurality of co-user elements corresponding to the plurality of co-users, the co-user elements including a mood element enabling the user to perceive the plurality of moods of the plurality of co-users; and

arrange, on the display, the plurality of co-user elements based at least in part on a sort parameter, the sort parameter being entered by the user via a sort selection user interface, the sort selection user interface including a selection control having a plurality of selection items that include the sort parameter, the sort parameter including a compatibility of the current mood of the user with the plurality of moods for the plurality of co-users.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the sort parameter includes the difference between the plurality of moods for the plurality of co-users and a reference mood value.

17. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the plurality of co-user elements are arranged from greatest difference to least difference from the reference mood value.

18. The apparatus of claim 16 wherein the plurality of co-user elements are arranged from least difference to greatest difference from the reference mood value.

19. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the mood element includes text that changes font based on the mood of the co-user corresponding to the mood element.

20. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the mood element includes an icon.

21. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the set of instructions further cause the at least one processor to calculate a plurality of mood values using metadata associated with content currently accessed by the plurality of co-users.
