Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for monitoring the deterioration of a rechargeable battery. A battery monitoring system may be used to store charging information, discharge information and storage information for a rechargeable battery to a data store. The charging information may include a number of charge cycles incurred by the rechargeable battery. The discharge information may include a number discharge cycles incurred by the rechargeable battery. The storage information may include information relating to periods when the rechargeable battery is not being actively charged or discharged. The battery monitoring system may be further used to determine an amount of deterioration of a battery performance characteristic based on the stored charging information, discharge information and storage information.

Claims (44)

1. A method performed by an electronic device configured to be powered by a battery, the method comprising:

monitoring battery usage habits in using the electronic device, wherein the usage habits include how often the battery is charged;

predicting remaining usable life of the battery based on the usage habits by approximating an amount by which the battery's equivalent series resistance (ESR) has degraded over time; and

displaying an indication of the remaining usable life of the battery in terms of time, wherein the displaying includes displaying an image that comprises:

a first representation of an initial capacity of the battery,

a second representation of the approximation of the amount of deterioration of battery capacity relative to the first representation,

a third representation of remaining capacity of the battery relative to the first representation, and

a fourth representation of the remaining usable life of the battery relative to the third representation.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the usage habits include an amount that the battery is discharged before being charged.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the usage habits include rate of charge for each charge cycle.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein the usage habits include whether charge cycles have been full or partial.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the usage habits include whether discharge cycles have been full or partial.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the usage habits include environmental factors that the device is exposed to.

7. An electronic device configured to be powered by a battery, the electronic device comprising:

a processor; and

a persistent store containing software instructions that are configured, when executed by the processor, to:

monitor battery usage habits in using the electronic device;

predict remaining usable life of the battery based on the usage habits by approximating an amount by which the battery's equivalent series resistance (ESR) has degraded over time; and

display an indication of the remaining usable life of the battery in terms of time, wherein the displaying includes displaying a recommendation to replace the battery based on a level of the amount,

wherein the electronic device is further configured to display an image that comprises:

a first representation of an initial capacity of the battery,

a second representation of the approximation of the amount of deterioration of battery capacity relative to the first representation,

a third representation of remaining capacity of the battery relative to the first representation, and

a fourth representation of the remaining usable life of the battery relative to the third representation.

8. The electronic device of claim 7 wherein the usage habits include how often the battery is charged.

9. The electronic device of claim 7 wherein the usage habits include an amount that the battery is discharged before being charged.

10. The electronic device of claim 7 wherein the usage habits include a rate of charge for each charge cycle.

11. The electronic device of claim 7 wherein the usage habits include whether charge cycles have been full or partial.

12. The electronic device of claim 7 wherein the usage habits include whether discharge cycles have been full or partial.

13. A method performed by an electronic device configured to be powered by a battery, the method comprising:

predicting a first amount of battery time remaining contingent on the electronic device operating in a first mode by approximating an amount by which the battery's equivalent series resistance (ESR) has degraded over time;

predicting a second amount of battery time remaining contingent on the electronic device operating in a second mode by approximating an amount by which the battery's ESR has degraded over time; and

displaying an indication that

the first amount of battery time remains if the electronic device is operated in the first mode; and

the second amount of battery time remains if the electronic device is operated in the second mode,

wherein the displaying includes displaying a recommendation to replace the battery based on a level of the lowest of the first and second amounts, wherein the displaying includes displaying an image that comprises:

a first representation of an initial capacity of the battery,

a second representation of the approximation of the amount of deterioration of battery capacity relative to the first representation,

a third representation of remaining capacity of the battery relative to the first representation, and

a fourth representation of the remaining usable life of the battery relative to the third representation based upon which of the first mode and the second mode the electronic device is operating in.

14. The method of claim 13 wherein the electronic device is a mobile communication device.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the first mode is standby mode, and the second mode is talk mode.

16. The method of claim 13 wherein the indication is in the form of text on a display screen.

17. The method of claim 13 wherein the initial battery capacity is represented by a full length of a bar graph and the remaining battery capacity is represented by a portion of the full length.
