Abstract

A method and system for processing buffer status reports (BSRs) such that when BSR triggering is performed, the size(s) of the necessary sub-header(s) are also to be considered together in addition to the BSR size. The steps of checking whether any padding region is available in a MAC PDU that was constructed, comparing the number of padding bits with the size of the BSR plus its sub-header, and if the number of padding bits is larger than the size of the BSR plus its sub-header, triggering BSR are performed. Doing so allows the sub-header(s) to be inserted or included into the MAC PDU or transport block (TB) or other type of data unit.

Claims (28)

1. A method of constructing a medium access control protocol data unit (MAC PDU) to include a buffer status report (BSR), the method comprising:

determining whether any padding bits are available in the MAC PDU;

if a number of padding bits is equal to or larger than a size of a Short BSR plus its sub-header but smaller than a size of a Long BSR plus its sub-header and if more than one Logical Channel Group (LCG) has buffered data, triggering the BSR; and

including the triggered BSR in the MAC PDU,

wherein the MAC PDU contains a Logical Channel ID (LCID) field and the triggered BSR,

wherein the triggered BSR is indicated explicitly in the LCID field by using a specific value that is different from any values of the LCID field for a short BSR and a long BSR, and

wherein the triggered BSR has a format that is equivalent to the short BSR.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the triggered BSR is located anywhere within the MAC PDU.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein a format of the triggered BSR has 2 bits of Logical Channel Group ID (LCG ID) field and 6 bits of buffer size field.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the specific value indicates that there is data associated with more than one logical channel.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the MAC PDU further includes a header, one or more control elements, or one or more MAC service data units (SDUs).

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein the one or more control elements are placed before the one or more MAC SDUs.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the header includes a plurality of sub-headers, and the each of the plurality of sub-headers corresponds to the one or more MAC SDUs.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the logical channel identification (LCID) field has 5 bits.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the LCID field identifies the logical channel instance of the corresponding MAC SDU or the type of the corresponding MAC control element or padding for the DL-SCH and UL-SCH respectively.

10. A mobile communication apparatus comprising:

a protocol entity adapted to determine whether any padding bits are available in the MAC PDU, to trigger a buffer status report (BSR) if a number of padding bits is equal to or larger than a size of a Short BSR plus its sub-header but smaller than a size of a Long BSR plus its sub-header and if more than one Logical Channel Group (LCG) has buffered data, and to include the triggered BSR in the MAC PDU,

wherein the MAC PDU contains a Logical Channel ID (LCID) field and the triggered BSR,

wherein the triggered BSR is indicated explicitly in the LCID field by using a specific value that is different from any values of the LCID field for a short BSR and a long BSR, and

wherein the triggered BSR has a format that is equivalent to the short BSR.

11. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the triggered BSR is located anywhere within the MAC PDU.

12. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 10 , wherein a format of the triggered BSR has 2 bits of Logical Channel Group ID (LCG ID) field and 6 bits of buffer size field.

13. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the specific value indicates that there is data associated with more than one logical channel.

14. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the MAC PDU further includes a header, one or more control elements, or one or more MAC service data units (SDUs).

15. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 14 , wherein the one or more control elements are placed before the one or more MAC SDUs.

16. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the header includes a plurality of sub-headers, and the each of the plurality of sub-headers corresponds to the one or more MAC SDUs.

17. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the logical channel identification (LCID) field has 5 bits.

18. The mobile communication apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the LCID field identifies the logical channel instance of the corresponding MAC SDU or the type of the corresponding MAC control element or padding for the DL-SCH and UL-SCH respectively.
