Abstract

Corn or soy plant biomass is electron beam irradiation processed and saccharified to produce sugars. The sugars are then converted to products such as alcohols, organic acids, hydrocarbons, hydrogen, proteins, carbohydrates, fats, oils, lipids, amino acids, vitamins, and mixtures thereof.

Claims (19)

1. A method comprising:

electron beam irradiating a biomass material comprising a genetically modified corn or soybean which has been irradiated with a radiation dose of between 10 Mrad and about 150 Mrad; and

producing a sugar by the saccharification of the electron beam irradiated biomass material.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the sugar is a low molecular weight sugar selected from the group consisting of glucose, xylose, arabinose, mannose, and galactose.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein irradiating comprises irradiating the biomass material with more than one electron beam device.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the saccharification comprises treating the electron beam irradiated biomass material with a cellulolytic enzyme.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the saccharification comprises chemically hydrolyzing the electron beam irradiated biomass material.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising converting the sugar to a product.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein said converting comprises fermenting the sugar with an organism.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the organism is a yeast or a bacteria.

9. The method of claim 6 , wherein the product is selected from the group consisting of an alcohol, an organic acid, a hydrocarbon, hydrogen, a protein, a carbohydrate, a fat, an oil, a lipid, an amino acid, a vitamin, and mixtures thereof.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the alcohol is selected from the group consisting of methanol, ethanol, propanol, isopropanol, butanol, ethylene glycol, propylene glycol, 1,4-butanediol, glycerin, and combinations thereof.

11. The method of claim 10 , wherein the alcohol is ethanol.

12. The method of claim 10 , wherein the alcohol is butanol.

The method of claim 6 , wherein the product is a carboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of formic acid, acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid, valeric acid, caproic acid, palmitic acid, stearic acid, oxalic acid, malonic acid, succinic acid, glutaric acid, oleic acid, linoleic acid, glycolic acid, lactic acid, γ-hydroxybutyric acid, and combinations thereof.

14. The method of claim 13 , wherein the carboxylic acid is butyric acid.

15. The method of claim 13 , wherein the carboxylic acid is lactic acid.

16. The method of claim 13 , wherein the carboxylic acid is succinic acid.

17. The method of claim 1 , further comprising comminuting the biomass material or the electron beam irradiated biomass material.
