Abstract

A process and system for sterilization of a product pathway of a blow-fill-seal machine. The process comprises steps of: (1) isolating a holding tank from the product pathway; (2) supplying a sterilizing agent to the product pathway of the BFS machine when the holding tank is isolated; (3) stopping the supply of sterilizing agent to the product pathway when a threshold is reached; and (4) supplying filtered compressed air to the product pathway when the supply of sterilizing agent is stopped. The process is preferably executed automatically without human intervention once initiated. Also described is a system for carrying out the process including a processor, valves and temperature and/or pressure sensors which provide information to the processor to determine when to open and close the valves to supply sterilizing agent and/or compressed air to the product pathway or holding tank.

Claims (45)

1. A process for sterilizing a product pathway of a blow-fill-seal machine, comprising the steps of:

isolating a holding tank from the product pathway;

supplying a sterilizing agent to the product pathway when the holding tank is isolated;

stopping supply of the sterilizing agent to the product pathway when a threshold is reached;

supplying filtered compressed air to the product pathway when supply of the sterilizing agent is stopped, wherein the filtered compressed air is continuously supplied to the holding tank during the process; and

wherein the product pathway is a pathway a product travels from an outlet of the holding tank to a filling nozzle of the blow-fill-seal machine and each said step of the process is controlled by a processor.

2. The process of claim 1 , wherein the holding tank is locked down in the isolating step.

3. The process of claim 1 , wherein the sterilizing agent is selected from the group consisting of steam, ozone, hydrogen peroxide, hot water, and combinations thereof.

4. The process of claim 1 , wherein the sterilizing agent is steam.

5. The process of claim 2 , wherein the steam has a temperature in the range of from about 100° C. to about 150° C.

6. The process of claim 2 , wherein the steam has a pressure in the range of from about 20 psig to about 40 psig.

7. The process of claim 2 , further comprising the step of monitoring the temperature in the product pathway.

8. The process of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is a temperature in the product pathway.

9. The process of claim 6 , wherein the threshold temperature is in a range of from about 100° C. to about 150° C.

10. The process of claim 1 , wherein the threshold is a period of time supplying the sterilizing agent to the product pathway.

11. The process of claim 10 , wherein the period of time is in the range of from about 10 minutes to about 50 minutes.

12. A process for sterilizing a product pathway of a blow-fill-seal machine, comprising the steps of:

isolating a holding tank from the product pathway; supplying a sterilizing agent to the product pathway when the holding tank is isolated;

stopping supply of the sterilizing agent to the product pathway when a threshold is reached;

supplying filtered compressed air to the product pathway when supply of the sterilizing agent is stopped

further comprising the step of calculating an Fo value for the product pathway; and

wherein the product pathway is a pathway a product travels from an outlet of the holding tank to a filling nozzle of the blow-fill-seal machine and each said step of the process is controlled by a processor.

13. The process of claim 10 , wherein the threshold is a calculated Fo value.

14. The process of claim 13 , wherein the Fo value is in the range of from about 50 minutes to about 70 minutes.

15. The process of claim 1 , further comprising the step of monitoring a pressure in the holding tank.

16. A process for sterilizing a product pathway of a blow-fill-seal machine, comprising the steps of: isolating a holding tank from the product pathway;

supplying a sterilizing agent to the product pathway when the holding tank is isolated; stopping supply of the sterilizing agent to the product pathway when a threshold is reached;

supplying filtered compressed air to the product pathway when supply of the sterilizing agent is stopped;

wherein the product pathway is a pathway a product travels from an outlet of the holding tank to a filling nozzle of the blow-fill-seal machine and each said step of the process is controlled by a processor;

further comprising the step of monitoring a pressure in the holding tank; and

wherein if the pressure in the holding tank is below a threshold pressure, the following steps are executed:

(i) aborting the sterilization process;

(ii) raising the pressure in the holding tank to a pressure at or above the threshold pressure by supplying filtered compressed air to the holding tank; and

(iii) subsequent to completion of step (ii), resuming the sterilization process.

17. The process of claim 16 , wherein the threshold pressure is in a range of from about 1 psig to about 10 psig.

18. The process of claim 1 , further comprising the step of generating a sterilization report.

19. A process for sterilizing a product pathway of a blow-fill-seal machine, comprising the steps of: isolating a holding tank from the product pathway;

supplying a sterilizing agent to the product pathway when the holding tank is isolated; stopping supply of the sterilizing agent to the product pathway when a threshold is reached;

supplying filtered compressed air to the product pathway when supply of the sterilizing agent is stopped;

wherein the product pathway is a pathway a product travels from an outlet of the holding tank to a filling nozzle of the blow-fill-seal machine and each said step of the process is controlled by a processor;

further comprising the step of cleaning the product pathway between the step of isolating the holding tank from the product pathway and the step of supplying sterilizing agent to the product pathway, wherein the step of cleaning of product pathway comprises:

retrieving filters from the product pathway;

supplying hot water to the product pathway;

supplying filtered compressed air to the product pathway; and

reinstalling filters in the product pathway.
