Abstract

The disclosure is directed to a communication system for a consist having a locomotive and a tender car. The communication system may have a locomotive access point configured to be located onboard the locomotive, a locomotive controller connected to the locomotive access point, a tender car access point configured to be located onboard the tender car, and a tender car controller connected to the tender car access point. The communication system may also have at least one network component configured to be located onboard the locomotive or the tender car and connected with a corresponding one of the locomotive and tender car access points, and a communication coupling extending between the locomotive and tender car access points. The locomotive and tender car controllers may be configured to selectively affect operation of the locomotive and tender car, respectively, based on operational information obtained via the at least one network component.

2. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least a first network component includes a first plurality of network components; and

the at least a second network component includes a second plurality of network components.

3. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein at least one network component of the at least a first network component and the at least a second network component includes at least one of a temperature sensor, pressure sensor, speed sensor, fuel level sensor, actuator, valve, pump, heat exchanger, accumulator, or regulator.

4. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the communication coupling is a multi-unit cable.

5. The communication system of claim 4 , wherein the operational information is communicated over the communication coupling as Ethernet data.

6. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the locomotive and tender car controllers are configured to selectively affect operation of the locomotive and tender car, respectively, based further on identification information communicated between the locomotive and tender car controllers via the communication coupling.

7. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the locomotive controller is configured to affect at least one of a fuel demand of an engine located onboard the locomotive, a blend rate of fuel consumed by the engine, a speed of the engine, and a load of the engine.

8. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein the tender car controller is configured to affect at least one of a supply rate of fuel to an engine located onboard the locomotive and a blend rate of fuel consumed by the engine.

9. The communication system of claim 7 , wherein the tender car controller is configured to affect supply rate and blend rate by adjusting operation of at least one of pump, a heat exchanger, an accumulator, and a regulator located onboard the tender car.

10. The communication system of claim 1 , wherein:

the consist has multiple locomotives supplied with fuel from the tender car;

the locomotive access point is a first locomotive access point associated with a first of the multiple locomotives;

the locomotive controller is a first locomotive controller;

the communication system further includes:

a second locomotive access point configured to be located onboard a second of the multiple locomotives; and

a second locomotive controller connected to the second locomotive access point;
