Abstract

Embodiments of the present disclosure are directed towards a seal assembly including a first seal and a second seal, wherein the first seal and the second seal axially abut one another within a retaining bore of a compressor, and cooperatively form an outer radial contour of the seal assembly that is retained by the retaining bore.

Claims (35)

1. A compressor, comprising:

a gear box comprising a retaining bore; and

a seal assembly, comprising:

a segmented oil seal; and

a segmented gas seal,

wherein the segmented oil seal and the segmented gas seal axially abut one another within the retaining bore, and cooperatively form an outer radial contour with different radial extents and a pair of outward facing walls stepped radially inward of the outer radial contour of the seal assembly that is retained by the retaining bore, wherein a segmented oil seal portion of the outer radial contour extends radially outwards from a rotor shaft farther than a segmented gas seal portion of the outer radial contour, wherein the retaining bore has complementary first and second shoulders about a cavity to axially retain the segmented oil seal and the segmented gas seal, such that each of the oil and gas seals engage with the bore of the gearbox with a portion of both the outer radial contour and the outward facing walls.

2. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the segmented oil seal comprises a first semi-circular half and a second semi-circular half.

3. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the segmented gas seal comprises a first semi-circular half and a second semi-circular half.

4. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the segmented oil seal and the segmented gas seal are each disposed about a rotor of the compressor.

5. The compressor of claim 4 , wherein the segmented gas seal is disposed upstream of the segmented oil seal relative to an inlet flow of the compressor.

6. The compressor of claim 1 , wherein the segmented gas seal and the segmented oil seal are retained within the retaining bore of the gear box without separate fasteners.

7. A method, comprising:

positioning a first seal of a seal assembly about a rotor shaft within a retaining bore of a gear box of a compressor;

sliding the first seal in an axial direction along the rotor shaft after positioning the first seal about the rotor shaft; and

positioning a second seal of the seal assembly within the retaining bore, wherein the first seal and the second seal axially abut one another within the retaining bore and an outer radial contour of the seal assembly is retained by a contour of the retaining bore; and

wherein the outer radial contour of the first seal extends outwards from the rotor shaft farther than the outer radial contour of the second seal.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the first seal is a gas seal.

9. The system of claim 8 , wherein the second seal is an oil seal.

10. The system of claim 7 , wherein positioning the first seal of the seal assembly within the retaining bore of the gear box of the compressor comprises positioning a first arcuate segment of the first seal within the retaining bore and positioning a second arcuate segment of the first seal within the retaining bore.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein positioning the first arcuate segment of the first seal within the retaining bore and positioning the second arcuate segment of the first seal within the retaining bore comprises rotating the first arcuate segment of the first seal into the retaining bore about a rotor disposed within the gear box and disposing the second arcuate segment of the first seal on top of the first arcuate segment of the first seal.

12. The system of claim 7 , wherein positioning the second seal of the seal assembly within the retaining bore of the gear box of the compressor comprises positioning a first arcuate segment of the second seal within the retaining bore and positioning a second arcuate segment of the second seal within the retaining bore.

13. The system of claim 12 , wherein positioning the first arcuate segment of the second seal within the retaining bore and positioning the second arcuate segment of the second seal within the retaining bore comprises rotating the first arcuate segment of the second seal into the retaining bore about a rotor disposed within the gear box and disposing the second arcuate segment of the second seal on top of the first arcuate segment of the second seal.

14. A system, comprising:

a compressor, comprising:

a gear box comprising a retaining bore;

a rotor assembly disposed within the gear box, comprising:

a rotor;

a gas seal disposed within the retaining bore;

an oil seal disposed within the retaining bore;

wherein the oil seal and the gas seal axially abut one another, and the oil seal and the gas seal cooperatively form an outer radial contour with different radial extents and first and second stepped outwardly facing walls formed radially inward of the outer radial contour that are at least partially gripped by the retaining bore, and wherein a segmented oil seal portion of the outer radial contour extends radially outwards from a rotor shaft farther than a segmented gas seal portion of the outer radial contour.

15. The system of claim 14 , wherein the gas seal comprises a first semicircular half and a second semi-circular half.

16. The system of claim 14 , wherein the oil seal comprises a first semi-circular half and a second semi-circular half.

17. The system of claim 14 , wherein the gas seal is disposed upstream of the oil seal relative to an inlet flow of the compressor, and the gas seal abuts an impeller of the compressor.

18. The system of claim 14 , wherein the gas seal and the oil seal are each disposed about the rotor.

19. The system of claim 14 , wherein the gas seal and the oil seal are retained within the retaining bore without fastening hardware.
