Abstract

The invention is directed to a device for inflating and sealing an inflatable structure, such as inflatable cushions. The device includes an assembly configured for inflating a cushion cavity disposed between first and second layers of a film, and a sealing mechanism that preferably includes a rotary sealing drum, which can include a heat source.

Claims (39)

1. An inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device, comprising:

an inflation assembly configured for inflating with a fluid a cushion cavity disposed between first and second layers of a film;

a sealing mechanism comprising a rotary sealing drum that comprises a heated periphery and that is disposed and configured for receiving overlapping portions of the first and second film layers adjacent the inflated cushion cavity and directing the overlapping portions downstream about the sealing drum periphery to heat seal the overlapping portions to each other to form a longitudinal seal that seals the fluid in the cushion cavity; and

a cooling portion that includes first and second cooling elements disposed downstream of the drum to cooperatively direct off the drum the heated sealed overlapping portions and hold the overlapping portions in contact sufficiently to retain the fluid within the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

2. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second cooling elements are pinched against each other to pinch the film layers together to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

3. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second cooling elements are disposed on opposite side surfaces of the sealed overlapping portions.

4. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 1 , wherein the cooling portion includes a third cooling element that cooperates with first and second elements to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

5. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 1 , wherein the first and second cooling elements comprise rollers.

6. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 1 , wherein the drum and cooling elements are positioned to direct the sealed overlapping portions along a curved path, and the curved path comprises:

a sealing segment about the periphery of the drum along a curve; and

a cooling segment in the cooling portion including a curve away from the drum and in a direction opposite the curve in the sealing segment.

7. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 1 , further comprising a drive belt positioned about the first cooling element to direct the sealed overlapping portions along a path through the cooling portion.

8. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 7 , wherein the drive belt cooperates with the first and second cooling elements to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 8 , wherein the drive belt comprises first and second drive belt positioned on opposite sides of the path to cooperatively pinch the film layers between the first and second drive belts to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim 9 , further comprising a third cooling element positioned downstream the first and second cooling elements that cooperates therewith and with the belt to cooperatively pinch the film layers between drive belts to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

11. The inflatable-cushion inflation and sealing device of claim of claim 7 , wherein the drive belt is positioned about the sealing drum to press the overlapping portions against the sealing drum and each other for longitudinally sealing the overlapping portions.

12. A method of inflating and sealing an inflatable cushion, comprising:

providing an inflation-cushion inflation and sealing device, including:

an inflation assembly;

a sealing mechanism including a rotary sealing drum that comprises a heated periphery; and

a cooling portion that includes first and second cooling elements disposed downstream of the drum;

providing a web of material including first and second layers of a film defining a cushion cavity disposed therebetween;

inflating the cushion cavity with a fluid using the inflation assembly; and

heat sealing overlapping portions of the first and second film layers adjacent the inflated cushion cavity by:

directing the overlapping portions about the sealing drum to heat the overlapping portions, and

directing the heated overlapping portions off the drum about the first and second cooling elements to cool the heated overlapping portion and retain the fluid in the cavity while the seal cools.

The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second cooling elements are disposed downstream of the drum, the cooling elements cooperatively directing the heated sealed overlapping portions off the drum and holding the overlapping portions in contact sufficiently to retain the fluid within the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising directing the overlapping portions along a curved path, wherein the drum and cooling elements are positioned to direct the sealed overlapping portions along the curved path, and the curved path comprises:

a sealing segment about the periphery of the drum along a curve; and

a cooling segment in the cooling portion including a curve away from the drum and in a direction opposite the curve in the sealing segment.

15. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second cooling elements are pinched against each other to pinch the film layers together to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

16. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second cooling elements are disposed on opposite side surfaces of the sealed overlapping portions.

17. The method of claim 12 , wherein the cooling portion includes a third cooling element that cooperates with first and second elements to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

18. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first and second cooling elements comprise rollers.

19. The method of claim 12 , wherein the inflation and sealing device further comprises a drive belt positioned about the first cooling element, the method further comprising directing the sealed overlapping portions along a path through the cooling portion using the belt.

20. The method of claim 19 , wherein the drive belt cooperates with the first and second cooling elements to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

21. The method of claim 20 , wherein the drive belt comprises first and second drive belts positioned on opposite sides of the path, the method further comprising pinching the film layers between the first and second drive belts to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

22. The method of claim 21 , further comprising a third cooling element positioned downstream the first and second cooling elements that cooperates therewith and with the belt to cooperatively pinch the film layers between drive belts to retain the fluid in the cushion cavity as the longitudinal seal cools.

23. The method of claim 12 , wherein the drive belt is positioned about the sealing drum, the method further comprising pressing the overlapping portions against the sealing drum and each other using the drive belt for longitudinally sealing the overlapping portions.
