Abstract

System and methods for adjusting electrical therapy based on impedance changes are disclosed herein. A method in accordance with a particular embodiment includes applying a therapeutic electrical signal to a patient via an implanted portion of a patient stimulation system that includes a signal delivery device in electrical communication with a target neural population of the patient. The electrical signal is delivered in accordance with a signal delivery parameter having a first value. Using the implanted portion of the patient stimulation system, a change in an impedance of an electrical circuit that includes the signal delivery device is detected. Based at least in part on the detected impedance change, the method can further include automatically adjusting the value of the signal delivery parameter from the first value to a second value different from the first, without human intervention.

Claims (30)

1. A method of detecting a disconnected or partially disconnected lead from a signal generator of a spinal cord stimulation system, wherein the lead includes two or more electrodes as part of an electrical circuit for delivering a therapy signal when the lead is implanted proximate to a patient's spinal cord region, the method comprising:

applying an electrical signal to at least one of the electrodes on the lead;

sampling the electrical signal to detect an impedance of the electrical circuit;

detecting an open circuit in the electrical circuit based on the impedance; and

providing an indication of a disconnected or partially disconnected lead when an open circuit is detected.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the electrical signal is a therapeutic signal applied at a frequency ranging from about 1.5 kHz to about 100 kHz.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of detecting an open circuit includes identifying a change in impedance.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of detecting an open circuit includes identifying a change of magnitude of the impedance.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of detecting an open circuit includes identifying a direction of an impedance change.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of detecting an open circuit includes identifying a change in power applied to the electrical circuit.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of detecting an open circuit includes identifying a change in voltage at one or more points along the electrical circuit.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of detecting an open circuit includes identifying a change in current passing through the electrical circuit.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising performing an impedance check across multiple electrodes on the lead.

10. A patient therapy system, comprising:

a patient-implantable portion that includes a pulse generator and a signal delivery device having an electrical contact positioned as part of an electrical circuit for delivering a therapy signal when the signal delivery device is implanted proximate to a patient's spinal cord region; and

an external programmer in wireless communication with the patient-implantable portion, the external programmer having a computer-readable medium with instructions that, when executed,

cause the pulse generator to apply an electrical signal to the patient's spinal cord region via the electrical contact,

samples the electrical signal to detect an impedance of the electrical circuit,

detects an open circuit in the electrical circuit, and

provides an indication of a disconnection or partial disconnection between the pulse generator and the signal delivery device when the open circuit is detected.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer is a physician's programmer.

12. The system of claim 10 , wherein the electrical signal is a therapeutic signal applied at a frequency ranging from about 1.5 kHz to about 100 kHz.

13. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer detects an open circuit by identifying a change in impedance.

14. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer detects an open circuit by identifying a change of magnitude of the impedance.

15. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer detects an open circuit by identifying a direction of an impedance change.

16. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer detects an open circuit by identifying a change in power applied to the electrical circuit.

17. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer detects an open circuit by identifying a change in voltage at one or more points along the electrical circuit.

18. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer detects an open circuit by identifying a change in current passing through the electrical circuit.

19. The system of claim 10 , wherein the computer-readable medium further includes instructions that, when executed, perform an impedance check across multiple electrical contacts on the signal delivery device.

20. The system of claim 10 , wherein the external programmer is a patient's remote.
