METHODS OF TREATING HYPERCHOLESTEROLEMIA
In various embodiments, the present invention provides methods of treating and/or preventing cardiovascular-related disease and, in particular, a method of treating hypercholesterolemia, comprising administering to a subject in need thereof a pharmaceutical composition comprising eicosapentaenoic acid or a derivative thereof.
1 . A method of treating atherosclerosis in a subject in need thereof, the method comprising: (a) identifying a subject at risk for developing atherosclerosis, and (b) administering to the subject about 1 g to about 4 g per day of ethyl eicosapentaenoate.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ethyl eicosapentaenoate comprises at least about 90%, by weight of all fatty acids present.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ethyl eicosapentaenoate comprises at least about 95%, by weight of all fatty acids present.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ethyl eicosapentaenoate comprises at least about 96%, by weight of all fatty acids present.
5 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ethyl eicosapentaenoate is present in a capsule.
6 . The method of claim 1 wherein the subject is not on concomitant lipid-altering therapy.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the ethyl eicosapentaenoate comprises substantially no DHA or esters thereof
8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of administering ethyl eicosapentaenoate inhibits formation of cholesterol domains in cell membranes.
9 . The method of claim 8 further comprising determining a baseline cholesterol domain level associated with the subject before administering the ethyl eicosapentaenoate.
10 . The method of claim 9 further comprising determining a second cholesterol domain level associated with the subject after administering the ethyl eicosapentaenoate.
11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the second cholesterol domain level is less than the baseline cholesterol domain level.
12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein a difference between the second cholesterol domain level and the baseline cholesterol domain level associated with the subject is less than a difference between a second cholesterol domain level and a baseline cholesterol domain level associated with a second subject who has not received about 1 g to about 4 g per day of ethyl eicosapentaenoate.
13 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the second subject received docosahexaenoic acid.
14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the second subject was administered about 1 g to about 4 g per day of the ethyl docosahexaenoate.
15 . The method of claim 12 , wherein the second subject received about 1 g to about 4 g per day of a mixture of ethyl eicosapentaenoate and ethyl docosahexaenoate.
16 . The method of claim 1 wherein the subject has one or more of: a baseline non-HDL-C value of about 200 mg/dl to about 300 mg/dl; a baseline total cholesterol value of about 250 mg/dl to about 300 mg/dl; a baseline vLDL-C value of about 140 mg/dl to about 200 mg/dl; and/or a baseline HDL-C value of about 10 to about 80 mg/dl.
