Abstract

An interactive television program guide is provided. The interactive television program guide provides a user with the opportunity to select a language for playing television programming and displaying program guide text. Television program audio in the desired language may be obtained from a SAP or digital audio track and played in the selected language. Television related information in the desired language may be obtained from a digital track. If television program audio or related information is not provided in the selected language, the program guide may use a default language. The program guide may coordinate program guide display screen text with languages available for television programs when the programs are broadcast to users.

Claims (32)

1. A method for providing media assets in multiple languages, the method comprising:

receiving a first user selection of a language for interacting with an interactive media guidance application;

transmitting media guidance data associated with the selected language to a user device;

receiving a second user selection of a media asset, wherein the media asset has a plurality of associated tracks having content in at least two different languages, wherein each track is associated with a single language, and wherein the first and the second user selections are separate selections; and

in response to the second user selection, transmitting only a track associated with the selected language to the user device.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first user selection occurs before the second user selection.

3. The method of claim 1 comprising storing the selected language in a memory of the user device.

4. The method of claim 1 comprising storing the selected language in a memory of a server.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media guidance data is associated with media guidance text that is displayed in the selected language.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the method is implemented at a television distribution facility.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the media asset is a video-on-demand media asset with a plurality of associated tracks having content in at least two different languages.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein tracks in languages other than the selected language are not sent by a server.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein tracks in languages other than the selected language have been removed prior to transmission to the user device.

10. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving a third user selection of an alternate language associated with the selected media asset, wherein the transmitting of the media guidance data comprises transmitting to the user device a track associated with the selected media asset having content in the alternate language, but not in the selected language.

11. A system for providing media assets in multiple languages comprising:

control circuitry configured to:

receive a first user selection of a language for interacting with an interactive media guidance application;

transmit media guidance data associated with the selected language to a user device;

receive a second user selection of a media asset, wherein the media asset has a plurality of associated tracks having content in at least two different languages, wherein each track is associated with a single language, and wherein the first and the second user selections are separate selections;

in response to the second user selection, transmit only a track associated with the selected language to the user device.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the first user selection occurs before the second user selection.

13. The system of claim 11 comprising a memory, wherein the selected language is stored in the memory.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the selected language is stored in a memory of the user device.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the media guidance data is associated with media guidance screen text that is displayed in the selected language.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the system comprises a television distribution facility.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the media asset is a video-on-demand asset with a plurality of associated tracks having content in at least two different languages.

18. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry does not send tracks in languages other than the selected language.

19. The system of claim 11 , wherein tracks in languages other than the selected language have been removed prior to transmission to the user device.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to:

receive a third user selection of an alternate language associated with the selected media asset; and

transmit to the user device a track associated with the selected media asset having content in the alternate language, but not in the selected language.
