Abstract

An output control method for controlling copy operation for a digital broadcast program permitted to be recorded for one generation (copy one generation) with an improved operating convenience. A digital content and a plurality of types of copy control information for controlling the copies of the digital content are received, and in accordance with the copy control information, the digital content is output to a plurality of recording media connected through a network. If first information contained in the copy control information received indicates copy generation information to permit copies for one generation and second information contained in the copy control information indicates “limited number of copies permitted” mode permitting a predetermined number of copies, then the digital content is output to only one of the recording media in a state permitting copying up to the predetermined number.

Claims (40)

1. An output controlling method, for receiving copy control information to control copying of digital content, and for outputting, according to the copy control information, the digital content to at least one recording apparatus connected via a network, the method comprising:

at least one of: recording, in a recording medium, digital content received with copy control information, and reproducing, from the recording medium, digital content received with copy control information; and

outputting the received digital content, or the digital content reproduced from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network,

wherein, the copy control information indicates permission for making a predetermined quantity of copies, in one of the following states:

a first state, which limits an output destination of the received digital content to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network, and limits the quantity of copies of the digital content to the predetermined quantity, and

a second state, which records received content to the recording medium, and manages the quantity of copies of digital content reproduced from the recording medium to the at least one recording apparatus connected via network, such that a sum of the following values is less than or equal to the predetermined quantity:

(a) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content recorded in the recording medium, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero,

(b) a quantity of copies of the digital content already copied from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero, and

(c) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content copied to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero.

2. An output controlling method, for receiving copy control information to control copying of digital content, and for outputting, according to the copy control information, the digital content to at least one recording apparatus connected via a network, the method comprising:

at least one of: recording, in a recording medium, digital content received with copy control information, and reproducing, from the recording medium, digital content received with copy control information; and

outputting the received digital content, or the digital content reproduced from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network,

wherein, the copy control information indicates permission for making a predetermined quantity of copies, in one of the following states:

a first state, which limits an output destination of the received digital content to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network, and limits the quantity of copies of the digital content to the predetermined quantity,

a second state, which respectively outputs the received digital content to each of the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network, wherein the quantity of the least one recording apparatus is less than or equal to the predetermined quantity, and

a third state, which records received content to the recording medium, and manages the quantity of copies of the digital content reproduced from the recording medium to the at least one recording apparatus connected via network, such that a sum of the following values is less than or equal to the predetermined quantity:

(a) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content recorded in the recording medium, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero,

(b) a quantity of copies of the digital content already copied from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero, and

(c) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content copied to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero.

3. An output apparatus, configured for receiving copy control information to control copying of digital content, and configured for outputting, according to the copy control information, the digital content to at least one recording apparatus connected via a network, the apparatus comprising:

a recording and reproducing unit configured to record, in a recording medium, digital content received with copy control information, and to reproduce, from the recording medium, digital content received with copy control information;

an outputting unit configured to output the received digital content, or the digital content reproduced from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network; and

a control unit configured to control the recording and reproducing unit and the output unit,

wherein the control unit is configured to perform control under one of the following states, when the copy control information indicates permission for making a predetermined quantity of copies:

a first state, in which the control unit limits an output destination of the received digital content to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network, and limits the quantity of copies of digital content to the predetermined quantity, and

a second state, in which the control unit records the received content to the recording medium, and manages the quantity of copies of digital content reproduced from the recording medium to the at least one recording apparatus connected via network, such that a sum of the following values is less than or equal to the predetermined quantity:

(a) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content recorded in the recording medium, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero,

(b) a quantity of copies of the digital content already copied from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero, and

(c) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content copied to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero.

4. An output apparatus, configured for receiving copy control information to control copying of digital content, and configured to output, according to the copy control information, the digital content to at least one recording apparatus connected via a network, the apparatus comprising:

a recording and reproducing unit configured to record, in a recording medium, digital content received with copy control information, and to reproduce, from the recording medium, digital content received with copy control information;

an outputting unit configured to output the received digital content, or the digital content reproduced from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network; and

a control unit configured to control the recording and reproducing unit and the output unit,

wherein the control unit is configured to perform control under one of the following states, when the copy control information indicates permission for making a predetermined quantity of copies:

a first state, in which the control unit limits an output destination of the received digital content to the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network, and limits the quantity of copies of the digital content to the predetermined quantity,

a second state, in which the control unit respectively outputs the received digital content to each of the at least one recording apparatus connected via the network, wherein the quantity of the least one recording apparatus is less than or equal to the predetermined quantity, and

a third state, in which the control unit records the received content to the recording medium, and manages the digital content reproduced from the recording medium to the at least one recording apparatus connected via network, such that a sum of the following values is less than or equal to the predetermined quantity:

(a) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content recorded in the recording medium, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero,

(b) a quantity of copies of the digital content already copied from the recording medium, to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero, and

(c) a quantity of copies permitted to be generated from the digital content copied to the at least one recording apparatus, wherein said quantity is greater than or equal to zero.
