Abstract

A MIMO radio transceiver to support processing of multiple signals for simultaneous transmission via corresponding ones of a plurality of antennas and to support receive processing of multiple signals detected by corresponding ones of the plurality of antennas. The radio transceiver provides, on a single semiconductor integrated circuit, a receiver circuit or path for each of a plurality of antennas and a transmit circuit or path for each of the plurality of antennas. Each receiver circuit downconverts the RF signal detected by its associated antenna to a baseband signal. Similarly, each transmit path upconverts a baseband signal to be transmitted by an assigned antenna.

Claims (25)

1. An apparatus comprising:

a plurality of antennas, wherein each antenna is configured to receive a radio frequency signal;

a circuit, operatively coupled to the plurality of antennas, configured to select for each received radio frequency signal, a frequency bandwidth from a plurality of frequency bandwidths having different widths; and

the circuit is further configured to demodulate for each antenna one of the received radio frequency signals; wherein the circuit is further configured to process each demodulated radio frequency signal at any selected one of the plurality of frequency bandwidths; wherein the plurality of frequency bandwidths include a single radio frequency (RF) channel of 20 MHz and a frequency bandwidth of 80 MHz.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein each received radio frequency signal is received using a multiple-input multiple-output scheme.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein each received radio frequency signal is an 802.11 channel and is in a 2.4 GHz unlicensed band.

4. The apparatus of claim 2 wherein each received radio frequency signal is an 802.11 channel and is in a 5 GHz unlicensed band.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the plurality of frequency bandwidths further include at least one frequency bandwidth exceeding 80 MHz.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the circuit is implemented on a single integrated circuit.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the circuit is implemented using a radio transceiver integrated circuit and a baseband processor integrated circuit.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the circuit is further configured to scale a number of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) paths.

9. The apparatus of claim 8 wherein the number of MIMO paths that are scaled include 3 and 4.

10. A method for use by an apparatus comprising:

receiving a radio frequency signal by each of a plurality of antennas of the apparatus;

selecting, by a circuit of the apparatus, for each received radio frequency signal, a frequency bandwidth from a plurality of frequency bandwidths having different widths;

demodulating for each antenna, by the circuit, one of the received radio frequency signals; and

selectively processing each demodulated radio frequency signal at the selected frequency bandwidth; wherein the circuit is configured to process each demodulated radio frequency signal at any selected one of the plurality of frequency bandwidths; wherein the plurality of frequency bandwidths include a single radio frequency (RF) channel of 20 MHz and a frequency bandwidth of 80 MHz.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein each received radio frequency signal is received using a multiple-input multiple-output scheme.

12. The method of claim 11 wherein each received radio frequency signal is an 802.11 channel and is in a 2.4 GHz unlicensed band.

13. The method of claim 11 wherein each received radio frequency signal is an 802.11 channel and is in a 5 GHz unlicensed band.

14. The method of claim 10 wherein the plurality of frequency bandwidths further include at least one frequency bandwidth exceeding 80 MHz.

15. The method of claim 10 wherein the circuit is implemented on a single integrated circuit.

16. The method of claim 10 wherein the circuit is implemented using a radio transceiver integrated circuit and a baseband processor integrated circuit.

17. The method of claim 10 wherein the circuit is further configured to scale a number of multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) paths.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the number of MIMO paths that are scaled include 3 and 4.
