Abstract

Methods for treating a cardiovascular disorder comprising concomitant administration of one or more extracellular matrix (ECM) based compositions directly to damaged or diseased cardiovascular tissue associated with the cardiovascular disorder, and provision of ventricular assistance. In a preferred embodiment, the ECM based compositions include an ECM material derived from a mammalian source.

Claims (8)

1. A method of treating a cardiovascular disorder in a subject in need thereof, comprising:

administering to said subject a mesothelial composition comprising acellular bioremodelable mesothelial tissue, said mesothelial tissue comprising endogenous proteoglycans, transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) and vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), said mesothelial tissue further comprising an exogenously added statin, wherein, when said mesothelial composition is administered to damaged cardiovascular tissue, said statin interacts with said mesothelial tissue, wherein myofibroblast and stem cell migration is induced, differentiation of said stem cells into cardiomyocytes is induced, RhoA activation is restricted and matrix metalloprotinase (MMP) production is reduced in said cardiovascular tissue, wherein said mesothelial composition induces neovascularization and bioremodeling of said cardiovascular tissue;

providing a ventricular assist device; and

simultaneously providing ventricular assistance to said subject by administering said ventricular assist device and said mesothelial composition to damaged cardiovascular tissue associated with said cardiovascular disorder.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein said mesothelial composition is administered directly to said cardiovascular tissue.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein said statin is selected from the group consisting of atorvastatin, cerivastatin, fluvastatin, lovastatin, mevastatin, pitavastatin, pravastatin, rosuvastatin and simvastatin.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein said ventricular assist device comprises a left ventricular assist device (LVAD).

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein said ventricular assist device comprises a right ventricular assist device (RVAD).
