Abstract

A method, computer program, and reception apparatus, and information providing apparatus. The method includes receiving content from a content source, and displaying the received content on a display. The reception apparatus 20 receives a first trigger associated with the received content. The reception apparatus retrieves a trigger parameters table (TPT) based on the first trigger. The TPT includes at least one event associated with one or a combination of a trigger identifier and a first media time of the received content, and is stored in a memory of the reception apparatus. Further, the reception apparatus determines whether to process the at least one event included in the TPT based on one or a combination of a protocol version and one or more capabilities defined in the TPT.

Claims (67)

1. A method of a reception apparatus for processing control information, comprising:

receiving content from a content source;

displaying the received content on a display;

receiving first control information associated with the received content;

retrieving, by the reception apparatus, an event table using location information included in the first control information, the event table including at least one event associated with one or a combination of an event identifier and a first media time of the received content;

storing the event table in a memory of the reception apparatus; and

determining whether to process the at least one event included in the stored event table based on one or a combination of a protocol version and one or more capabilities defined in the event table.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of receiving content comprises:

receiving the content via at least one of a satellite broadcast, a cable television transmission, a terrestrial television broadcast, and the Internet.

3. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of retrieving the event table comprises:

processing a Program Map Table (PMT) of a broadcast virtual channel associated with the received content;

processing a Service Signaling Channel (SSC) to retrieve a Service Map Table (SMT);

discovering coordinates of a File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport (FLUTE) session;

acquiring a FLUTE File Delivery Table (FDT):

comparing the location information of the first control information against Content-Location values in the FLUTE FDT until a match is found; and

retrieving the event table based on the matched Content-Location value.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of retrieving the event table comprises:

performing an Internet http GET using the location information of the first control information.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

computing a random time period based on a diffusion attribute included in the event table; and

retrieving supplemental content referenced in the event table after the computed random time period.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving second control information indicating that one of the at least one event is to lie retimed to a second media time; and

associating the one of the at least one event included in the event table stored in the memory with the second media time.

7. The method according to claim 1 , wherein

the event table defines both the protocol version and the one or more capabilities,

the protocol version includes major and minor protocol versions of the event table instance, and

the one or more capabilities is one or more capabilities of the reception apparatus that is required for an application associated with the at least one event.

8. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving second control information that includes the event identifier for one of the at least one event.

9. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving second control information, wherein

the step of determining includes determining whether to process the at least one event included in the stored event table based on when the second control information is received.

10. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium having embedded therein instructions, which when executed by a computer, causes the computer to perform a method of a reception apparatus for processing control information, the method comprising;

receiving content from a content source;

displaying the received content on a display;

receiving first control information associated with the received content;

retrieving, by the reception apparatus, an event table using location information included in the first control information, the event table including at least one event associated with one or a combination of an event identifier and a first media time of the received content;

storing the event table in a memory of the reception apparatus; and

determining whether to process the at least one event included in the stored event table based on one or a combination of a protocol version and one or more capabilities defined in the event table.

11. A reception apparatus, comprising:

a receiver configured to receive content from a content source;

a display interface configured to output the received content for display; and

a processor configured to

receive first control information associated with the received content,

retrieve an event table using location information included in the first control information, the event table including at least one event associated with one or a combination of an event identifier and a first media time of the received content,

store the event table in a memory of the reception apparatus, and

determine whether to process the at least one event included in the stored event table based on one or a combination of a protocol version and one or more capabilities defined in the event table.

12. The reception apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein

the receiver is configured to receive the content via at least one of a satellite broadcast, a cable television transmission, a terrestrial television broadcast, and the Internet.

13. The reception apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein the processor is configured to

process a Program Map Table (PMT) of a broadcast virtual channel associated with the received content;

process a Service Signaling Channel (SSC) to retrieve a Service Map Table (SMT);

discover coordinates of a File Delivery over Unidirectional Transport (FLUTE) session;

acquire a FLUTE File Delivery Table (FDT);

compare the location information of the first control information against Content-Location values in the FLUTE FDT until a match is found; and

retrieve the event table based on the matched Content-Location value.

14. The reception apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein

the processor is configured to perform an Internet http GET using the location information of the first control information to retrieve the event table.

15. The reception apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein

the processor is configured to compute a random time period based on a diffusion attribute included in the event table; and retrieve supplemental content referenced in the event table after the computed random time period.

16. The reception apparatus according to claim 11 , wherein

the processor is configured to receive second control information indicating that one of the at least one event is to be retimed to a second media time, and associate the one of the at least one event included in the event table stored in the memory with the second media time.

17. An information providing apparatus, comprising:

a memory configured to store an event table, the event table including at least one event associated with one or a combination of an event identifier and a media time of content to be provided to a reception apparatus; and

circuitry configured to provide the event table to the reception apparatus, which determines whether to process the at least one event included in the event table stored in the reception apparatus based on one or a combination of a protocol version and one or more capabilities defined in the event table, wherein

the reception apparatus is configured to retrieve the event table using location information included in first control information that is associated with the content to be provided to the reception apparatus.
