DIFFERENCING DISK IMPROVED DEPLOYMENT OF VIRTUAL MACHINES
Determining host machines on which to place a virtual machine. The method includes determining that a virtual machine to be deployed to a host will use a differencing disk chain based off of one or more base disks. One or more hosts are identified having the one or more base disks already available to the one or more hosts. One of the one or more hosts is selected at which to place the virtual machine based on the one or more hosts having the one or more base disks already available to the one or more hosts. The virtual machine is placed at the selected host.
1 . In a virtualized network computing environment, a method of determining host machines on which to place a virtual machine, the method comprising:
determining that a virtual machine to be deployed to a host will use a differencing disk chain based off of one or more base disks;
identifying one or more hosts having the one or more base disks already available to the one or more hosts;
selecting one of the one or more hosts at which to place the virtual machine based on the one or more hosts having the one or more base disks already available to the one or more hosts; and
placing the virtual machine at the selected host.
2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein in the one or more base disks are stored on a common network share for a plurality of different hosts, such that the one or more base disks can be used as base disks at other hosts.
3 . The method of claim 1 , wherein in the one or more base disks are stored on the identified hosts.
4 . The method of claim 1 , wherein in the one or more base disks are shared across different tenants in a multi-tenant environment.
5 . The method of claim 4 , further comprising enforcing isolation between tenants by preventing tenants from modifying or deleting the one or more base disks.
6 . The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying one or more hosts having the one or more base disks already available to the one or more hosts comprises identifying base disks that are binary equivalents.
7 . The method of claim 1 , wherein identifying one or more hosts having the one or more base disks already available to the one or more hosts comprises identifying base disks based on a disk identifiers.
8 . In a virtualized network computing environment, a method of provisioning a disk for a virtual machine, the method comprising:
for a virtual machine to be deployed to a host, determining that the host already has available to the host one or more base disks that can be used as one or more base disks for a disk to be provisioned for the virtual machine; and
as a result, determining to not copy the disk to be provisioned for the virtual machine to the host;
creating a differencing disk using the one or more base disks to provision the disk for the virtual machine at the host.
9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein in the one or more base disks are stored on a common network share for a plurality of different hosts, such that the one or more base disks can be used as base disks for other hosts.
10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein in the one or more base disks are stored on the host.
11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein in the one or more base disks are shared across different tenants in a multi-tenant environment.
12 . The method of claim 11 , further comprising enforcing isolation between tenants by preventing tenants from modifying or deleting the one or more base disks.
13 . The method of claim 8 , wherein determining that the host already has available to the host one or more base disks that can be used as one or more base disks for a disk to be provisioned for the virtual machine comprises identifying base disks that are binary equivalents.
14 . The method of claim 8 , wherein determining that the host already has available to the host one or more base disks that can be used as one or more base disks for a disk to be provisioned for the virtual machine comprises identifying base disks based on disk identifiers.
15 . In a virtualized network computing environment, a system for provisioning a disk for a virtual machine, the system comprising:
one or more processors; and
one or more computer readable media, wherein the one or more computer readable media comprise computer executable instructions that when executed by at least one of the one or more processors cause at least one of the one or more processors to perform the following:
for a virtual machine to be deployed to a host, determining that the host already has available to the host one or more base disks that can be used as one or more base disks for a disk to be provisioned for the virtual machine; and
as a result, determining to not copy the disk to be provisioned for the virtual machine to the host;
creating a differencing disk using the one or more base disks to provision the disk for the virtual machine at the host.
16 . The system of claim 15 , wherein in the one or more base disks are stored on a common network share for a plurality of different hosts, such that the one or more base disks can be used as base disks for other hosts.
17 . The system of claim 15 , wherein in the one or more base disks are stored on the host.
18 . The system of claim 15 , wherein in the one or more base disks are shared across different tenants in a multi-tenant environment.
19 . The system of claim 18 , further comprising enforcing isolation between tenants by preventing tenants from modifying or deleting the one or more base disks.
20 . The system of claim 15 , wherein determining that the host already has available to the host one or more base disks that can be used as one or more base disks for a disk to be provisioned for the virtual machine comprises identifying base disks that are binary equivalents.
