Abstract

An electronic device provides access to a memory via both an expansion interface and a wireless network interface. The wireless-enabled electronic device can be removably mounted in a compatible holder. Electronic devices with wireless memory access can provide memory access to networked remote devices. It is thereby possible for a remote device to access the memory content of the electronic device via the wireless network interface, and cause data transfers between the memory and the remote device.

Claims (28)

1 . (canceled)

2 . A method, comprising:

plugging an electronic device in a compatible holder enabled to removably mount the electronic device and connect a power source thereto, the electronic device having an expansion interface and enclosing a control sub-system, a non-volatile memory enabled to store one or more files, and a wireless network interface;

communicating, via the wireless interface, between the electronic device and a remote device;

directing the control sub-system from the remote device, at least in part in response to client-server transactions initiated via a remote client user interface;

loading some of the one or more files into the non-volatile memory, via the wireless interface, from and as directed by the remote device;

loading other of the one or more files into the non-volatile memory, via the expansion interface;

using at least one of the loaded files for a particular use beyond simply storage; and

wherein the communicating, the directing, and the loading via the wireless interface, are at least in part performed without requiring any local user action.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the loading some of the one or more files into the non-volatile memory, from and as directed by the remote device, is in accordance with a first scenario; and loading other of the one or more files into the non-volatile memory, via the expansion interface, is in accordance with a second scenario.

4 . The method of claim 3 , wherein the first scenario corresponds to the one or more files being attachments received by the remote device, the second scenario corresponds to the one or more files being photographs taken by and loaded as directed by a camera comprising the holder and coupled to the expansion interface, and the particular use is viewing the attachment on the camera.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the client is a web browser and the client-server transactions are web browser to web server transactions.

6 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising performing the server side transactions via an embedded server of the control sub-system.

7 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising operating the remote client interface on the remote device.

8 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising browsing, via the remote client user interface, data obtained from the electronic device via the wireless interface.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the browsing is of the contents of the non volatile memory.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the data obtained comprises reduced-size versions of the one or more files stored in the non-volatile memory.

11 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the reduced-size is accomplished by compression.

12 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the reduced-size is accomplished by scaling.

13 . The method of claim 10 , wherein the one or more files comprise media objects.

14 . The method of claim 2 , further comprising transferring data to the remote device via the wireless interface, in accordance with a predetermined response to an observed change in a physical property monitored by a sensor of the electronic device.

15 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the sensor is a button and the physical property monitored corresponds to a local user operation of the button.

16 . The method of claim 14 , wherein the predetermined response is in accordance with a configurable function.

17 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the wireless network interface is implemented in accordance with at least one version of the BlueTooth industry standard.

18 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the expansion interface is implemented in accordance with at least one version of the USB industry standard.

19 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the expansion interface is implemented in accordance with at least one version of an expansion module standard.

20 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the expansion interface is implemented in accordance with at least one version of a CompactFlash standard.

21 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the non-volatile memory comprises at least one of an embedded fixed size memory and a removable memory.
