Abstract

A method, user equipment and non-transitory computer readable memory for establishing an emergency service using a wireless network includes unilaterally deactivating, at the user equipment when the user equipment needs to establish an emergency service, at least one active context with the wireless network without deactivating at least one other active context. Thereafter directing to the wireless network, a request to establish the emergency service that identifies the emergency service and one or more contexts that remain active after the unilateral deactivation of the at least one active context by the user equipment, synchronizing, in response to and based on the request, current context status information of the user equipment with the wireless network, and then establishing the emergency service using the wireless network with which the active context was deactivated.

1. A method for establishing an emergency service for a user equipment using a wireless network, comprising:

unilaterally deactivating, at the user equipment when the user equipment needs to establish an emergency service, at least one active context with the wireless network without deactivating at least one other active context; thereafter

directing to the wireless network, a request to establish the emergency service and that identifies the emergency service and one or more contexts that remain active after the unilateral deactivation of the at least one active context by the user equipment;

synchronizing, in response to and based on the request, current context status information of the user equipment with the wireless network, and then

establishing the emergency service using the wireless network with which the active context was deactivated.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of unilaterally deactivating at least one active context without deactivating at least one other active context comprises unilaterally locally deactivating from an active packet domain communication with the wireless network.

3. The method according to claim 2 , further comprising directing to the wireless network, an emergency attach following the local deactivation which clears resources used for active packet domain communication.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the emergency attach is directed to the wireless network with the request to establish the emergency service.

5. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the step of unilaterally deactivating at least one active context without deactivating at least one other active context comprises deactivating the at least one active context via explicit signaling to the wireless network.

6. The method according to claim 5 , further comprising directing to the wireless network, a deactivation message explicitly indicating the at least one deactivated context.

7. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the deactivation message is directed to the wireless network after the request to establish the emergency service is directed to the wireless network.

8. The method according to claim 6 , wherein the request to establish the emergency service directed to the wireless network comprises a SERVICE REQUEST and the deactivation message directed to the wireless network comprises one of a PDN CONTEXT DEACTIVATION or a PDN DISCONNECT REQUEST including a cause indicator explicitly identifying the service as an emergency service.

9. The method according to claim 8 , wherein the SERVICE REQUEST is an EXTENDED SERVICE REQUEST.

10. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising, after directing the request to establish the emergency service to the wireless network:

establishing packet data network services with one context for Internet protocol multimedia subsystem signaling;

registering to and establishing an emergency session with an Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem; and

establishing a media bearer and activate a voice data context for the established emergency session.

11. A portable telecommunications user equipment, comprising:

a processing system comprising at least one processor and at least one memory storing a computer program;

the at least one memory with the computer program being configured with the at least one processor to cause the user equipment to at least:

unilaterally deactivate at least one active context with a wireless network without deactivating at least one other active context when the user equipment needs to establish an emergency service; thereafter

direct to the wireless network, a request to establish the emergency service and that identifies the emergency service and one or more contexts that remain active after the unilateral deactivation of the at least one active context by the user equipment, such that in response to and based thereon, current context status information of the user equipment is synchronized with the wireless network, and then

establish the emergency service using the wireless network with which the active context was deactivated.

12. The user equipment according to claim 11 , wherein the unilateral deactivation of the at least one active context without deactivating at least one other active context comprises unilateral local deactivating from an active packet domain communication with the wireless network.

13. The user equipment according to claim 12 , wherein the at least one memory with the computer program are further configured with the at least one processor to cause the user equipment to direct to the wireless network, an emergency attach following the local deactivation which clears resources used for active packet domain communication.

14. The user equipment according to claim 13 , wherein the at least one memory with the computer program are further configured with the at least one processor to cause the user equipment to direct the emergency attach to the wireless network with the request to establish the emergency service.

15. The user equipment according to claim 14 , wherein the at least one memory with the computer program are further configured with the at least one processor to cause the user equipment to direct to the wireless network, a deactivation message explicitly indicating the at least one deactivated context.

16. The user equipment according to claim 15 , wherein the at least one memory with the computer program are further configured with the at least one processor to cause the user equipment to direct the deactivation message to the wireless network after the request to establish the emergency service is directed to the wireless network.

17. The user equipment according to claim 15 , wherein the request to establish the emergency service directed to the wireless network comprises a SERVICE REQUEST and the deactivation message directed to the wireless network comprises one of a PDN CONTEXT DEACTIVATION or a PDN DISCONNECT REQUEST including a cause indicator explicitly identifying the service as an emergency service.

18. The user equipment according to claim 17 , wherein the SERVICE REQUEST is an EXTENDED SERVICE REQUEST.

19. The user equipment according to claim 11 , wherein the unilateral deactivation of the at least one active context without deactivating at least one other active context comprises deactivation of the at least one active context via explicit signaling to the wireless network.

20. The user equipment according to claim 11 , wherein the at least one memory with the computer program are further configured with the at least one processor to cause the user equipment to, after directing the request to establish the emergency service to the wireless network:

establish packet data network services with one context for Internet protocol multimedia subsystem signaling;

register to and establish an emergency session with an Internet Protocol multimedia subsystem; and

establish a media bearer and activate a voice data context for the established emergency session.

21. A non-transitory computer readable memory tangibly storing a computer program executable by at least one processor, the computer program comprising:

code to be executed on a processing system of a user equipment, the code being for:

unilaterally deactivating, when the user equipment needs to establish an emergency service, at least one active context with the wireless network without deactivating at least one other active context; thereafter
