Metal matrix composite
View Patent ↗A metal matrix composite (MMC), such as a brake drum, includes a preform having ceramic particles and ceramic fibers and defining a plurality of voids. The metal matrix composite also includes a support element, such as a metal, disposed within the voids of the preform. The MMC has a wear surface defined by both the preform and the support element.
1. A brake drum for use in vehicle braking applications, said brake drum comprising:
a preform comprising ceramic particles and ceramic fibers with said preform having an inner surface and an opposing outer surface and defining a plurality of voids;
a support element comprising a metal and disposed within said plurality of voids of said perform between said inner surface and said outer surface of said preform for forming a metal matrix composite with said support element terminating at said inner surface of said preform such that said inner surface of said preform remains exposed; and
a wear surface defined by said exposed inner surface and said support element such that said wear surface is defined by both said preform and said support element;
wherein said inner surface of said preform has a cylindrical configuration such that said wear surface is continuous along said inner surface of said preform.
2. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said preform has a ring shaped configuration with said inner surface of said preform defining a hollow interior between two ends of said preform.
3. A brake drum as set forth in claim 2 wherein said support element spans said hollow interior of said preform at one of said ends of said preform.
4. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ceramic fibers have an aspect ratio of greater than 3:1.
5. A brake drum as set forth in claim 4 wherein greater than 90 percent of the ceramic fibers are randomly orientated in three dimensions.
6. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said support element defines a plurality of holes for allowing said brake drum to be coupled to the vehicle.
7. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said preform is present at said wear surface in an amount of from about 10 to 60 percent based on a surface area of said wear surface.
8. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said preform is present at said wear surface in an amount of from about 20 to 50 percent based on a surface area of said wear surface.
9. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said preform is present at said wear surface in an amount of from about 32 to 38 percent based on a surface area of said wear surface.
10. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said outer surface includes a chamfer for minimizing the propagation of said metal onto said inner surface as said metal infiltrates said voids of said preform.
11. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ceramic fibers are selected from the group of alumina-silica fibers, alumina-silica-zirconia fibers, carbon-graphite fibers, and combinations thereof.
12. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said metal is selected from the group of aluminum, magnesium, titanium, and combinations thereof.
13. A brake drum as set forth in claim 1 wherein said ceramic particles are selected from the group of elements from period 2, 3, or 4 of the periodic table of the elements.
