Abstract

A method, system, apparatus, and computer program product are provided for providing peripheral device management. For example, a method is provided that includes receiving, from a user device, a request to access at least one peripheral device, the request comprising information regarding the user device. The method may further include determining, based at least in part on at least one compliance rule and the information regarding the user device, whether to grant the request, and, in an instance in which it is determined to grant the request, causing access to the at least one peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated.

Claims (60)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, in a compliance server from a peripheral device, a request for a user device to access the peripheral device, the request comprising information regarding the user device and being sent on behalf of the user device by the peripheral device in response to detection of the user device in proximity to the peripheral device;

determining, using the compliance server, based at least in part on at least one compliance rule and the information regarding the user device, whether to grant the request; and

in an instance in which it is determined to grant the request:

causing, using the compliance server, access to the peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

causing, using the compliance server, the access to the peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated further comprises causing software corresponding to the at least one peripheral device to be installed on the user device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one compliance rule comprises a requirement that the user device be located within at least one geographic condition.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

the at least one compliance rule comprises at least one temporal condition.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein:

causing, using the compliance server, the access to the peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated comprises causing the peripheral device to permit access to the peripheral device by the user device.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

receiving, using the compliance server, information regarding the peripheral device.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein:

determining, using the compliance server, whether to grant the request is further based at least in part on the information regarding the peripheral device.

8. The method of claim 7 , further comprising:

in an instance in which it is determined to deny the request:

causing, using the compliance server, access to another peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated.

9. The method of claim 6 , further comprising:

causing, using the compliance server, another request to be generated based at least in part on the information regarding the peripheral device; and

wherein the other request comprises at least one of the following: a maintenance request pertaining to the peripheral device, or a support request pertaining to the peripheral device.

10. The method of claim 6 , wherein:

the information regarding the peripheral device comprises information gathered via at least one sensing device communicatively associated with the peripheral device.

11. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

determining, using the compliance server, based at least in part on the information regarding the user device, whether the user device has been compromised; and

denying, using the compliance server, the request to access the peripheral device in response to a determination that the user device has been compromised.

12. An apparatus comprising at least one processor and at least one memory storing program code instructions, the at least one memory and program code instructions being configured to, with the at least one processor, direct the apparatus to at least:

receive a request to access a particular service associated with at least one peripheral device, the request received on behalf of a user device and comprising information regarding the user device;

identifying, based at least in part on the particular service requested via the user device, at least one suitable peripheral device configured to provide the particular service, the at least one suitable peripheral device further being identified based at least in part upon a proximity of the at least one suitable device to the user device;

determine, based at least in part on at least one compliance rule and the information regarding the user device, whether to grant the request; and

in an instance in which it is determined to grant the request:

cause access to the at least one suitable peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein:

access to the at least one suitable peripheral device by the user device is facilitated causing software corresponding to the at least one suitable peripheral device to be installed on the user device.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein:

the at least one compliance rule comprises a requirement that the user device be located in at least one geographic condition in order to access the at least one suitable peripheral device.

15. The apparatus of claim 12 , the apparatus being further directed to:

receive the request to access the particular service from a peripheral device on behalf of the user device in response to a request obtained by the peripheral device from the user device to access the peripheral device;

determine whether the peripheral device comprises the at least one suitable peripheral device associated with the particular service requested via the user device;

designate the peripheral device as the at least one suitable peripheral device in response to determining that the peripheral device comprises the at least one suitable peripheral device; and

cause access to the peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated in response to designation of the peripheral device as the at least one suitable peripheral device.

16. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the request to access the particular service comprises a request to print a document.

17. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein:

wherein the request is automatically generated by the user device and received when the user device is in proximity to the peripheral device.

18. The apparatus of claim 12 , the apparatus being further directed to:

determine whether the user device is associated with a compromised state; and

deny the request in response to determining that the user device is associated with the compromised state.

19. The apparatus of claim 12 , the apparatus being further directed to:

receive information regarding a status of the at least one suitable peripheral device;

cause another request to be generated based at least in part on the information regarding the status of the at least one suitable peripheral device; and

wherein the other request comprises at least one of the following: a maintenance request, or a support request.

20. A computer program product comprising a non-transitory computer readable storage medium having program code portions embodied therein, the program code portions being configured to, upon execution, direct an apparatus to at least:

receive, from a user device, a request to access a particular service associated with at least one peripheral device, the request comprising information regarding the user device and a location of the user device, the request being automatically generated by the user device when the user device is within a proximity of the at least one peripheral device;

determine, based at least in part on at least one compliance rule and the information regarding the user device, whether to grant the request to access the particular service;

identify, based at least in part upon the location of the user device and a functionality required by the particular service, at least one suitable peripheral device associated with the particular service;

designate the at least one suitable peripheral device as the at least one peripheral device; and

in an instance in which it is determined to grant the request:

cause access to the at least one suitable peripheral device by the user device to be facilitated.
