Abstract

Accepting a third party new article submission is disclosed. A first submission, including a first URL of a first news article that is different from a second URL of a previously accepted second news article submission, is received. One or more automated checks are performed on at least a portion of the first submission. Whether to accept the first submission is automatically determined based at least in part on the performed checks.

Claims (74)

1. A method of receiving a content contribution at a system for viewing content items, the method comprising:

presenting an interface to the system to a first user, wherein the interface includes multiple content items for which multiple preference events have been received from multiple users;

receiving from the first user a unique identifier of a new content item offered for submission to the system; and

operating a computer processor of the system to:

compare the identifier to a collection of blocked identifiers that are valid but that will not be accepted by the system;

if the identifier is blocked, present to the first user an error message that does not indicate the identifier is blocked; and

if the identifier is not blocked:

prior to obtaining the new content item, determine whether the new content item is accessible; and

accept the new content item based on an identity of the first user, wherein said accepting includes:

identifying a length of time the first user has been a registered user of the system; and

determining whether the first user previously submitted inappropriate content to the system.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the error message comprises an indication of a system configuration error.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein determining whether the new content item is accessible comprises:

attempting to access the new content item with the identifier; and

if the attempt to access the new content item fails, relaying the error to the first user.

4. The method of claim 3 , wherein determining whether the new content item is accessible further comprises:

soliciting from the first user a correction to the identifier; and

re-attempting to access the new content item with the corrected identifier.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, if the identifier of the new content item matches identifiers of one or more content items previously accepted by the system, operating the computer processor to:

solicit from the first user an opinion whether the new content item is a duplicate of any of the at least one or more content items.

6. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating the one or more processors to:

determine whether the first user connected to the system via an anonymous proxy.

7. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating the one or more processors to:

determine whether the new content item is spam.

8. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating the one or more processors to:

if the new content item is accepted, present the new content item in the interface as displayed to a second user who was previously identified to the system as a friend of the first user.

9. The method of claim 1 , further comprising operating the one or more processors to:

if the new content item is accepted, present a permalink for the new content item in the interface as displayed to a second user who was previously identified to the system as a friend of the first user.

10. A computer program product for receiving a content contribution at a system for viewing content items, the computer program product being embodied in a non-transitory computer readable storage medium and comprising instructions for:

presenting an interface to the system to a first user, wherein the interface includes multiple content items for which multiple preference events have been received from multiple users;

receiving from the first user a unique identifier of a new content item offered for submission to the system;

comparing the identifier to a collection of blocked identifiers that are valid but that will not be accepted by the system;

if the identifier is blocked, presenting to the first user an error message that does not indicate the identifier is blocked; and

if the identifier is not blocked:

prior to obtaining the new content item, determining whether the new content item is accessible; and

accepting the new content item based on an identity of the first user, wherein said accepting includes:

identifying a length of time the first user has been a registered user of the system; and

determining whether the first user previously submitted inappropriate content to the system.

11. A system, comprising:

one or more processors; and

a memory coupled with the one or more processors, wherein the memory is configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:

present an interface to the system to a first user, wherein the interface includes multiple content items for which multiple preference events have been received from multiple users;

receive from the first user a unique identifier of a new content item offered for submission to the system;

compare the identifier to a collection of blocked identifiers that are valid but that will not be accepted by the system;

if the identifier is blocked, present to the first user an error message that does not indicate the identifier is blocked; and

if the identifier is not blocked:

prior to obtaining the new content item, determine whether the new content item is accessible; and

accept the new content item based on an identity of the first user, wherein said accepting includes:

identifying a length of time the first user has been a registered user of the system; and

determining whether the first user previously submitted inappropriate content to the system.

12. The system of claim 11 , wherein the error message comprises an indication of a system configuration error unrelated to the new content item.

13. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory is further configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to, if the identifier of the new content item matches identifiers of one or more content items previously accepted by the system:

solicit from the first user an opinion whether the new content item is a duplicate of any of the one or more content items.

14. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory is further configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:

determine whether the first user connected to the system via an anonymous proxy; and

determine whether the new content item is spam.

15. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory is further configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:

if the new content item is accepted, present the new content item in the interface as displayed to a second user who was previously identified to the system as a friend of the first user.

16. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory is further configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:

if the new content item is accepted, present a permalink for the new content item in the interface as displayed to a second user who was previously identified to the system as a friend of the first user.

17. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory is further configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to, if the new content item is accepted:

categorize the new content item based on information solicited from the first user; and

initialize to zero a count of positive preference events for the new content item.

18. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, if the new content item is accepted, operating the computer processor to:

categorize the new content item based on information solicited from the first user; and

initialize to zero a count of positive preference events for the new content item.

19. The method of claim 1 , further comprising, if the identifier is not blocked, operating the computer processor to:

compare the identifier of the new content item to identifiers of content items previously accepted by the system;

present to the first user one or more content items previously accepted by the system that have identifiers that match the identifier of the new content item; and

solicit from the first user a preference event for at least one of the one or more content items.

20. The system of claim 11 , wherein the memory is further configured to provide the one or more processors with instructions that, when executed, cause the one or more processors to:

compare the identifier of the new content item to identifiers of content items previously accepted by the system;

present to the first user one or more content items previously accepted by the system that have identifiers that match the identifier of the new content item; and

solicit from the first user a preference event for at least one of the one or more content items.
