Abstract

A method is described for transmitting files to a mobile communications device from an associated personal computer over one of a plurality of potential communication paths between the mobile communications device and the computer. The method includes receiving at the computer a user request that a selected file stored on the computer be transmitted to the mobile communications device; selecting a communications path from among the plurality of potential communication paths; and causing a copy of the selected file to be transmitted to the mobile communications device over the selected communication path.

Claims (35)

1. A method of transmitting files to a mobile communications device from a personal computer over one of a plurality of communication paths, comprising:

receiving a request that a selected file stored on the computer be transmitted to the mobile communications device;

ranking the communication paths, based on at least one characteristic of each of the communication paths;

selecting one of the communication paths, based on the ranking; and

transmitting a copy of the selected file to the mobile communications device over the selected communication path.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein the at least one characteristic comprises bandwidth.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises cost.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein ranking the communication path includes pre-storing a relative preference ranking of paths according to path type.

5. The method of claim 4 , wherein the path type comprises at least one of wired local link, WiFi, short-range wireless, and wireless WAN.

6. The method of claim 5 , wherein selecting one of the communication paths includes identifying the highest-ranked available path type and determining whether the size of the selected file exceeds a threshold size for the highest-ranked available path type and, if so, delaying the causing operation until a higher-ranked path type is available.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the determining further includes displaying a transfer confirmation query and receiving an input response, and wherein delaying is in response to input response denying confirmation.

8. The method of claim 5 , wherein determining whether the size of the selected file exceeds a threshold size is performed if the highest-ranked available path type is wireless WAN, but not otherwise.

9. The method of claim 1 , further including transcoding the selected file prior to the causing a copy of the selected file to be transmitted to the mobile communications device over the selected communication path.

10. The method of claim 9 , wherein the transcoding occurs prior to the selecting.

11. A personal computer to transmit files to a mobile communications device, comprising:

a plurality of interfaces for connecting to the mobile communications device through a plurality of potential communications paths, and

a storage element storing a plurality of files; and

a central processing unit configured to:

receive a request that a selected file stored on the computer be transmitted to the mobile communications device,

rank the communication paths, based on at least one characteristic of each of the communication paths,

select one of the communication paths, based on the ranking, and

transmit a copy of the selected file to the mobile communications device over the selected communication path.

12. The personal computer of claim 11 wherein the at least one characteristic comprises bandwidth.

13. The personal computer of claim 11 , wherein the at least one characteristic comprises cost.

14. The personal computer of claim 11 wherein ranking the communication path includes ranking available communication paths based upon a pre-stored relative preference ranking of paths according to path type.

15. The personal computer of claim 14 , wherein the path type comprises at least one of wired local link, WiFi, short-range wireless, and wireless WAN.

16. The personal computer of claim 15 , wherein the central processing unit is configured to select one of the communication paths by identifying the highest-ranked available path type and determining whether the size of the selected file exceeds a threshold size for the highest-ranked available path type and, if so, delaying the causing operation until a higher-ranked path type is available.

17. The personal computer of claim 16 , wherein the central processing unit is configured to determine by displaying a transfer confirmation query and receiving an input response, and wherein delaying is in response to input response denying confirmation.

18. The personal computer of claim 11 , wherein the central processing unit is further configured to transcode the selected file prior to causing a copy of the selected file to be transmitted to the mobile communications device over the selected communication path.

19. The personal computer of claim 18 , wherein the transcoding occurs prior to the selecting.

20. A non-transitory computer-readable medium for transmitting files to a mobile communications device from a personal computer over one of a plurality of communication paths, the non-transitory computer-readable medium having encoded thereon computer-executable instructions, which when executed by a computer cause the computer to:

receive a request that a selected file stored on the computer be transmitted to the mobile communications device;

rank the communication paths, based on at least one characteristic of each of the communication paths;

select one of the communication paths, based on the ranking; and

transmit a copy of the selected file to the mobile communications device over the selected communication path.
