Abstract

An IP telephony communication being conducted by a user telephony device is transitioned from a first communications path to an alternate communications path if a quality of the telephony communication falls below a threshold level. The user telephony device and/or elements of an IP telephony system handling the call could detect when the quality is below the threshold level. The communication might also be transitioned to a cellular based voice or video communications channel if the strength of a wireless data connection between the user telephony device and a wireless access point providing access to a data network falls below a threshold level. Further, the speed of movement of the telephony device may be taken into account in determining which alternate communication path should be used.

Claims (37)

1 . A method, performed by one or more processors of an Internet Protocol (IP) telephony system, for transitioning a communications path of a telephony communication from a first communications path to a second communications path, comprising:

determining whether a quality of a communication which is traversing a first IP based communications path between a user's telephony device and an IP telephony system has fallen below a quality threshold;

determining a speed of movement of the users telephony device; and

determining how to attempt to transition the communication from the first IP based communications path to an alternate communications path based on the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the step of determining how to attempt to transition the communication comprises:

determining that an attempt should be made to transition the communication to a second IP based communications path if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is below a speed threshold; and

determining that an attempt should be made to transition the communication to a third IP based communications path that is different from the second IP based communications path if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is above the speed threshold.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the second IP based communications path is an IP based communications path that traverses a wireless data communications device.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is below the speed threshold, the method further comprises:

attempting to setup the second IP based communications path between the user's telephony device and the IP telephony system via a wireless data communications device; and

transitioning media of the communication from the first IP based communications path to the second IP based communications path if the attempt to setup the second IP based communications path is successful.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the third IP based communications path is a data channel provided by a cellular telephony service provider.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is greater than the speed threshold, the method further comprises:

attempting to setup a third IP based communications path between the user's telephony device and the IP telephony system via a data channel provided by a cellular telephony service provider; and

transitioning media of the communication from the first IP based communications path to the third IP based communications path if the attempt to setup the third IP based communications path is successful.

7 . The method of claim 6 , wherein if the attempt to setup the third IP based communications path is not successful, the method further comprises:

causing a cellular based voice or video communications path to be setup between the user's telephony device and the IP telephony system via a cellular telephony system; and

transitioning media of the communication from the first IP based communications path to the cellular based voice or video communications path.

8 . The method of claim 7 , wherein causing a cellular based voice or video communications path to be setup comprises an IP telephony system causing a telephone call to be placed to the user's telephony device over the cellular telephony system.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the telephone call is sent from a gateway that is local to the user's telephony device.

10 . The method of claim 7 , wherein causing a cellular based voice or video communications path to be setup comprises causing the user's telephony device to place a telephone call to the IP telephony system over the cellular telephony system.

11 . A system for transitioning a communications path of a telephony communication from a first communications path to a second communications path, comprising:

means for determining whether a quality of a communication which is traversing a first IP based communications path between a user's telephony device and an IP telephony system has fallen below a quality threshold;

means for determining a speed of movement of the users telephony device; and

means for determining how to attempt to transition the communication from the first IP based communications path to an alternate communications path based on the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device.

12 . A system for transitioning a communications path of a telephony communication from a first communications path to a second communications path, comprising:

a quality monitoring unit that determines whether a quality of a communication which is traversing a first IP based communications path between a user's telephony device and an IP telephony system has fallen below a quality threshold;

a speed determining unit that determines a speed of movement of the users telephony device; and

a communications path transition unit that determines how to attempt to transition the communication from the first IP based communications path to an alternate communications path based on a determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device.

13 . The system of claim 12 , wherein communications path transition unit determines that an attempt should be made to transition the communication to a second IP based communications path if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is below a speed threshold, and wherein the communications path transition unit determines that an attempt should be made to transition the communication to a third IP based communications path that is different from the second IP based communications path if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is above the speed threshold.

14 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the second IP based communications path is an IP based communications path that traverses a wireless data communications device.

15 . The system of claim 13 , further comprising an IP communications path setup unit, wherein if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is below the speed threshold, the IP communications path setup unit attempts to attempting to setup the second IP based communications path between the user's telephony device and the IP telephony system via a wireless data communications device, and wherein the communications path transition unit transitions media of the communication from the first IP based communications path to the second IP based communications path if the attempt to setup the second IP based communications path is successful.

16 . The system of claim 13 , wherein the third IP based communications path is a data channel provided by a cellular telephony service provider.

17 . The system of claim 13 , further comprising a cellular communications path setup unit, wherein if the determined speed of movement of the user's telephony device is greater than the speed threshold, the cellular communications path setup unit attempts to setup a third IP based communications path between the user's telephony device and the IP telephony system via a data channel provided by a cellular telephony service provider, and wherein the communications path transition unit transitions media of the communication from the first IP based communications path to the third IP based communications path if the attempt to setup the third IP based communications path is successful.

18 . The system of claim 17 , wherein if the attempt to setup the third IP based communications path is not successful, the cellular communications path setup unit causes a cellular based voice or video communications path to be setup between the user's telephony device and the IP telephony system via the cellular telephony system, and wherein the communications path transition unit transitions media of the communication from the first IP based communications path to the cellular based voice or video communications path.

19 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the cellular communications path setup unit causes a telephone call to be placed to the user's telephony device over the cellular telephony system.

20 . The system of claim 18 , wherein the cellular communications path setup unit causes the user's telephony device to place a telephone call to the IP telephony system over the cellular telephony system.
